Correct. Well look at MidnightBSD. They were frontlines to fight an age verification BS in California, but now they comply lol. So I guess we will see. That is why I have started shortlisting some OS
MidningtBSD are compliant aholes:
Uro is a hero.
I do still love OMLx - have Rome on one, Rock on another. With the statement of the dev I’ll keep that as is for now.
Testing Artix on a separate machine.
Thank you for the information. I always never trusted Snap packages when I was using Kubuntu before switching to Rome. It is always good to hear from someone who knows far more than I do. As I understand the current situation, OM uses a custom configured systemd. When the developer makes this change for age verification, OM can still remove it.
If this is incorrect, then correct me.
Not so fast:
Video filters Linux Age Verification: FOSS in the Brave New World
Near the end of the video he states that countries are already looking into imposing mandatory age verification on VPN services. I assume this is for the commercial VPN services. No idea how any government could regulate a private VPN. The Chinese Communists are having a rough time eliminating the private VPN instances in their own tofu country.
Welcome to the group. Don’t read too much into the battle of the keyboards currently ongoing. I have been here about a year and this is as heated as I have seen it. Most of the time, this place is pretty laid back. They really don’t want to inflict physical destruction on each other. At least I don’t think they want to do that.

@bero I have no idea if it will be usefull for you and a team. I just find this.

Hi
regarding the argument “Systemd” , I already discuss my point with @zeroability .
Openmandriva needs and deserve a “bullsh*ts-free” init system.
Going on with systemd is a disservice for the user, and it goes against the general intents of Openmandriva at this point.
Artix has an awesome dinit implementation, antix ships it as well, KaOS is looking at dinit as systemd altrenative , dinit’s sinthax is dead simple , and similar to systemd’s sinthax, so in my opinion it can be a good option.
But there are other many good choices, as runit or openrc of course
Doubling the work for age verification is stupid imho
My propose is the following: adding an optional option to add an age verification daemon during installation process, so Openmandriva would accoplish this stupid law, but user can also choose if install sh#t on his PC or not (users’ PC , users’ sh#t , sh#t freedom is good sh#t
)
There wasn’t much of a discussion. You said we should do that and I asked if you were going to commit your time and efforts to make that happen. You never responded. Which means you are probably not going to do that.
If I were to guess about the outcome of a potential replacement init system, I doubt you would even spend time to help us test it. You would use it after others have spent their time implementing and testing it. Which means you don’t understand the scope of what you are asking for, and probably do not understand what it’s going to take to accomplish it.
It must be a great luxury to be so cavalier with other people’s free time. No one here is being paid to make or provide this Linux distribution. Everyone is a volunteer and many have day jobs. So, if you are not willing to help out don’t expect others to do it just because you wish it.
Regarding your answer:
- I can help to test an iso with a different init implemented
- Testing, implementintig stuff in a distro, packaging etc. , that’s dev team work, not specifically users’r job
- Also, including software that respect users’ privacy and security should be your duty.
- Nobody want to force you about how you should use your free time , my suggestion is only about the choice I would made if I was a dev to implement a sane init system in my distro
- Linux is a big community, you can use most of the job already done by Artix and Antix , fork it and implement on Openmandriva.
- Also, if a change like this would be eventually made, I do not pretend it to be done immediately, of course.
Long story short, I really don’t think blaming me to give a suggestion is a valid answer.
Talking about simple , neautral facts : systemd will implement age verification , and even without this anti-feature implemented, it remains a bloatd piece of cr#p.
What you want to do with it, it’s only your choice.
What kind of user experience you want to offer in your distro, it’s also your choice.
What level of privacy and security you want to ship with software included in your distro, also your choice.
But please, avoid to blame me for giving my opinion about the matter.
Unfortunately, this is a “in or out” situation : systemd is what it is , the choice is taking it with all its issues, or kicking it out.
I perfectly understand dev’s job on Openmandriva is a free time , unpayed job , and I respect that for sure.
But I don’t see any reasonable alternative to escape from the situation , exept replacing systemd
Your entire post is hyperbole, and you have no understanding of the law, what we are already doing to patch out bad stuff with systemd, or anything about the process of what our “dev’s work” actually entails. Thus, you saying we are somehow not respecting user security and privacy is entirely ignorant.
It is your responsibility to seek understanding and knowledge through dialog. Whatever you see and hear on the Internet is not our responsibility to dispel or confirm for you. I can absolutely blame you for that.
You do not understand what it takes to make, maintain, test, and deliver a Linux distribution, thus you have no claim to preach to us about how we should go about that. I can absolutely blame you for that, too.
If you require something else than what we offer to satisfy your conscience, then please feel free to use a different distribution. We harbor no hard feelings about that.
I don’t really think you have the mental skills to understand someone else’s speech, otherwise you’d never write the answer above.
So, I’ m forced to repeat it again : systemd is not an user respectful package, including it consequentially means you allow a not respectful user package in your system, without any alternative for users to choose a valid replacement, except to use a different distro not including systemd. This is a fact.
Blaming me (three times now) in this rude way, just for giving an opinion about a technical choice I would make, reflect only your arrogance , and maybe your incompetence about achieving a task other distros already achieved.
The right answer by you would have had to be : ”Sorry , it can’t be done , small team” , and It would be perfectly ok, but it seems you are not humble enough for giving those kind of frank answers.
So , now I’ll let you alone with your arrogance here, blame yourself for that .
I am fortunate your delicate ego does not govern my mental skills. You may wish to learn about how best to cope with that instead of making it my problem.
Again, if you are too lazy to have a dialog with us about what we are patching out of systemd then you are being intentionally ignorant. Repeating yourself will not change that.
Your collectivist retort is not helping your case, and it insults the intelligence of everyone else here. The blame was not on your suggestion. It was on the implication of how our distro is somehow not respecting user security and privacy based on your intentional ignorance and laziness. Projection does not provide you a favorable position in a dispute.
First, I did say that. Second, you have no right whatsoever to dictate to me how I should speak to anyone given the amount of undue and ignorant criticisms you made about our distro and aspects of it you have decided to be intentionally ignorant about. This is just more projection.
It does not make me arrogant just because I disagree with you and point out that you are being intentionally ignorant and lazy. I was being kind about all of that before, despite being abrupt and blunt. If I am going to be accused of doing something I did not do, then I have no further obligation to be fair to you.
Offense is the best defence ever in your case, right dude ?
Fact : you are including a technology like systemd that have many issues, described above. You want to patch it to kick out some stuff? Good for you, but in my opinion is not the right approach, wasting time to fix and promote usage of a “bad apple technology” instead to offer something with a different ethic , at least as alternative…. But again , it’s your distro , make your choices about, but do not blame someone else to suggest something else.
Your arrogance is not about your point of views , that differs from my ones , but the way you’re defending your convinctons.
This arrogance in my opinion does not fit your role , youd’ better to write less sentences but more code, probably you’re more suited to write the second one for sure.
Frankly , I didn’t like your tones months ago, and I do not like them right now, and I think other future discussins about any kind of argument couldn’t be done between both of us.
I end this sh#t here, it’s going too much OT , that’s sucking a lot , have fun
I have no idea who you are trying to impress, but you are not good at it.
Words on a screen. You interpret them how you see fit. I have no control over that. I’m just not going to let you tell me what I am doing, when I am not doing it. You could be helping more here, but chose to pick a clout fight. There is no way to make yourself look good on the other side of this discussion. Not even trying to disparage me.
Again, words on a screen. I could care less if you “like them” or not. You are really only letting the Internet know that you are too lazy to have a discussion with someone that you do not agree with and will begin with ad hominem when your feelings get hurt. Whether the person you are communicating with had any intent to do that or not. I’m not your therapist.
This is the off-topic thread…
Tell us you have a sore lack of self awareness, without telling us you have a sore lack of self awareness.
So the audience can be aware of how this all started (since you don’t scroll up and read what was said thus expect the people reading it will not do the same):
You mention spammed and cross-posted which is disrespectful. I let that slide and gave you a blunt and abrupt reply. It has absolutely come true. You said it’s our responsibility to provide it to you and not the user’s job:
Then you also told us how we should accomplish it using packages from Antix. Which I guess is some form of misunderstanding on your part because you don’t know how we package things, nor did you bother to ask. You don’t know how patches work:
Pro tip: facts don’t become true just because you put “Fact:” in front of them. It also doesn’t make your stated opinion become a fact.
In my opinion all this noise about systemd is a bit ahead of what will be with OpenMandriva.
We’ll cross the bridge when we get to it, so you will be welcome to provide your feedback on real facts and not on conjecture.
As for now, I’d just suggest to take into consideration what @Bero, the Association Chairman, wrote:
@Bero is the only one entitled to speak on behalf of the Association, along with Council members (and only in the case they don’t speak for themselves).
Quarrels with other folks - including mutual offences, blames, flames, and whatnot, or just misunderstandings -are just sterile and not fruitful to anyone.
So, if car manufacturers puts a GPS tracker on all of their cars, which could be useful if my car is stolen, and I complain about it, that’s 100% noise and zero signal, because for now, I can switch it off. Never mind the fact that its there now, and the auto manufacturers could decide to turn it on at any time.
Really?
I’ll let you in on a secret… that’s already the case.![]()
Try buying a car made by the MAGA boss’s buddy. (alseT)
Let’s just say that controlling systemd in OM is the least of our worries in today’s world.
P.S. You can’t even turn it off!
That only makes my point stronger.
There’s a reason I refuse to buy new cars, this is the same reason I bought a six year old quad core and put OPNSense on it, to replace the ISP router functionality and expand on blocking services I don’t want.
I’ve been following the discussion on the ‘1984 Edition’ and the concerns regarding the aged daemon. To help keep our handheld and Steam Deck users ‘unlabeled’ and functional in regions with these new filters, I’ve developed sonicd its on my super sonic x github org but I can’t even post links on here… smh I have backing from Mutahar from Some Ordinary gamers and been featured on the ageless floss list.
It’s got a lightweight C-daemon of ageD that provides a stealth bypass by mocking the necessary handshakes, ensuring the system returns a ‘verified’ state locally without ever touching a government API or corporate database. Despite some of the hurdles and friction I’ve encountered while working on the handheld ISO, I still want to see the project succeed in protecting user sovereignty.
Would the team be interested in me submitting a .spec file for this to be integrated into Cooker/Rome, or should I keep it as a standalone ‘Sonicland’ utility for my unofficial handheld OM iso for now?
