Yet Another new guy

I’m not a Linux expert, but rather a casual Linux user for many years (off and on). I’m not happy with the direction of macOS, Windows, iOS, etc… - AI profiling for everyone. I believe in privacy even though I have nothing to hide. So, I’ve been searching for possible alternatives to my daily-driver… macbook air.

Doing the typical research (searching youtube)… I found Lunduke and that led me here. I’m sure the mature OM user’s are rolling their eyes, but hey… we newbies might turn out to be okay

I’ve used Linux off and on over the years, and I don’t consider myself an expert, although I’m not completely new.

For “proof of concept” I’ve installed OM on a really old laptop, and on a newer AMD mini-pc to use as test systems. I need to determine if I can use this as my everyday work (and personal) OS. I use a macbook Air now . Everyday I have… pgAdmin connected to multiple DB servers; VSCode with multiple projects open; Docker with multiple containers running. Assuming I can do that with OpenMandriva, I’m gonna try to make the switch.

I’m a developer by trade… mostly back-end Postgresql and Java, some javascript front-end experience, and some Python. I wish I had some Linux development experience, but I don’t :frowning: But, maybe in the future I’s be willing to contribute in some way to OpenMandriva… I’m a developer, but not a “Linux developer”.

Thank you for your contributions, and focus on the product! Keep up the great work!

Welcome! We are happy to see you here and hope you will decide to make this your home.

Yikes another enemy of Surveillance Capitalism.

Edit: If anyone is interested in Surveillance Capitalism look for book or lectures by Shoshana Zuboff. No doubt there are others discussing this.

Welcome message

Welcome to OpenMandriva and our forum. This forum is for users of OpenMandriva Linux operating systems.

OpenMandriva forums are mainly users helping other users.

You can talk to our developers at OpenMandriva Chat.

Users with problems need to read How to get better results when posting about problems before reporting any issues or problems. The article is not too long and Do Read.

When a new user has a problem please search the OMLx documentation. OpenMandriva wiki, Forum Resource Guide and the “Search” function of the forum.

If you don’t find what you are looking for, try an Internet search. A lot can be found in the documentation or forum posts for other Linux distributions. If the user finds something written for another distro but has a question, ask in OpenMandriva Chat.

For serious technical problems and package/feature requests please submit a bug report here.

Note: We are a small group. All contributors and developers are unpaid volunteers.
You can make OpenMandriva grow and improve by getting involved.

Any help with testing will be appreciated, whether you are a technical expert or not. The more people and hardware we can get involved, the better we can do OMLx releases and packaging. We also do a lot of testing on virtual machines. Developers tend to use Qemu, most user-level testers use VirtualBox..

Some suggestions that we hope will be useful:

We ask that problems reported in the forum or in a bug report be limited to one problem per thread or report.

We suggest that if your problem reported in the forum or in OM-Chat is not resolved within a few days, please file a proper bug report.

If you have not already done so, scroll through the “Big Warning” at the top of this page and read the information or use the links provided.

Before reporting any problems, read this.

We are simply and respectfully trying to make people aware that as a very small group we are volunteering, without remuneration, our time, expertise, etc, to help you.

Welcome from another freshman! Freedom and privacy are particularly valuable things to keep in mind.

Hopefully this is not the case. If you had nothing to hide, you could not be trusted with any confidential material and you could never be considered to be loyal in any way, shape or form. Keeping relevant things secret is always necessary.

Be proud of your hidden secrets.

Agreed on the privacy concerns of windows moving ahead. Once I have a break in my uni workload, I’m going to post my own review and experiences with OM so far, but I’m very impressed so far. Just what I needed, and great hardware support on my Thinkpads. Such a shame that windows decided to speed up the death of privacy and turn each user into an AI algo teaching farm. So bloated and resource inefficient too. Unfortunately have to keep 1 laptop running win11 for now just to keep program compatibility for uni software, and therein lies the last enemy of Linux distros moving forward - software compatibility. Hopefully more move over to Linux once win10 dies later this year, and the demand for Linux support puts pressure on software vendors.

Welcome aboard.

My opinion on Windows 10 and 11 is it is spyware at the operating system level. The only way to get around that privacy issue is to never use it. I tell that to people who I know who use Windows 10 or 11 when they expect me to fix it. I have to tell them that the only way is to replace Windows with a Linux distro. When it comes to giving up the Windows indoctrination, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.

Since I discovered OM about two months ago, I concluded that every new installation I perform will get OM. I don’t believe in spreading Woke distros that are against what I believe.

But I need to stop kicking myself for installing other distros in the past because at that time I didn’t know any better.

If an old, retired, but mostly uneducated truck driver can install OM and get it working, then anyone should be able to do it. Granted, it took me three tries. All my fault, of course.
