Wifi conditionally and randomly breaking, controller disappearing

Brief description of exactly what I’m trying to do | Expected Results:
Get wifi working normally. It should not stop working after manually disconnecting it or randomly after some restarts. I shouldn’t need to reset and reconfigure my bios constantly.

Description of the issue (screenshots if relevant):

Wifi is completely breaking after manually disconnecting it and after random restarts (not always). This includes after disconnecting via the applet, Airplane Mode, and the "Wi-Fi & Internet" panel of KDE settings. Nothing I've tried has helped or worked so far besides resetting my bios via the dedicated reset button on the back I/O. When breakage occurs no connections are shown in the applet, no network scanning takes place, and I cannot connect in the settings. Said behavior is usually accompanied by either the whole screen freezing (sometimes unrecoverable), or the taskbar and applets. The wifi device/controller completely disappears from the computer via lspci and such after breakage and a restart.

  • PBO: Advanced at multiple breakages. Off after reading the warning.
  • Expo: On
  • Integrated Graphics (CPU): Off | Fix for this.
  • Secure Boot: Off

Additional information:

What I tried (didn’t work):

  • Updating fully as advised here before and after breakage.
  • Updating firmware via fwupdmgr. There were not updates available.
  • Upgrading Motherboard firmware to the latest version.
  • Reinstalling the operating system three separate times, twice due to this issue before discovering the bios “fix”. The hash was correct before and after flashing to installation media.
  • Restarting NetworkManager during a breakage.
  • Switching the wifi setting in bios to wifi only, wifi and bluetooth, and auto directly after breakage and after bios resets.
  • Disabled PCIe Active State Power Management (ASPM) in /etc/default/grub with the correct method for grub2.

  • Disabled Wifi powersaving in /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d.

  • Setup timeshift with grub2 bootable snapshots (btrfs) skipping the middle section as I didn’t want to mess with dnf5. This is relevant because I reverted to a snapshot taken before wifi broke and it didn’t work.
  • Checked if there was a conflicting network management service (iwd, dgcpcd, systemd-networkd)
  • Checked if there was a software or hardware wifi kill switch active or conflicting items (/etc/NetworkManager/conf.d).

Resetting the bios (seemingly) isn’t a sustainable solution due to yellow warning text popping up on boot warning that it is not advisable to reset the CMOS battery (bios) with PBO enabled. This appears right before the prompt to enter the disk encryption password. I’ve disabled PBO for now but this is not ideal.

Conclusion

Thank you for your time. Besides this issue I’ve been very happy with the OpenMandriva experience and find all your work very impressive. Heard about it from Lunduke and was happy to learn it suited my needs and requirements.

You have put so much effort into this. I almost hate to ask questions due to that. Every thought I have leads me to believe this is a hardware issue. I’m no dev, but just a retired I.T. guy.

Typically, how long does it run before it crashes? Is it only after disconnects and restarts? Have you tried running another distro’s live USB as a test?

We have folks looking at this right now and the consensus is that the kernel version in Rock does not have the ath12k-wifi7 driver. Trying to decide the best way to update your kernel to the latest version used by ROME.

The earliest kernel version with proper support for your qualcomm wifi controller is version 7.0.3. Since you are using Rock you don’t have it, but we can enable the rolling repo for just this one package.

I have run the command and updated the kernel.

While this has remedied the UI freezes, and I can successfully disconnect via all methods, it has borked the WiFi’s ability to connect, rendering it functionally unusable and worse than before.

I can disconnect via applet, menu and turn on airplane mode without issue, yet the WiFi gets stuck on the second phase “Setting up interface”.

I have tried resetting the BIOS and NetworkManager again to no avail and actually discovered another bug in the process where setting the WiFi setting to “WiFi-Only” hard locks (rfkill list) the entire device instead of just the Bluetooth module. It is unlocked after switching back to “Auto” in bios.

It should also be noted that I cannot currently get to the desktop with the normal/first boot option due to some sort of Timeshift issue. I unlock disk encryption and get to the splash screen where “Plasma 6” is displayed and then the system enters the command line emergency mode. I can successfully enter pre- and post-new kernel snapshots via the boot menu, but restoring either faces me with this issue.

Perhaps this is due to me restoring to a pre-new-kernel snapshot with the new kernel installed. Initially, I assumed it would default to the kernel version the snapshot was taken in, but I could be wrong. (Timeshift lets you switch between kernel versions in the boot menu but doesn’t give you the option when inside a snapshot and pressing the “Restore” button). I suspect it may have defaulted to the newest kernel available and borked it.

I am currently writing this via a pre-new-kernel snapshot (live mode) with the kernel version, 6.14.2-desktop-3omv2590 and the WiFI is working, although presumably with the same issues described in the original post. I’ve logged into the site via another machine incase something happens to this one, so no worries there. :wink:

This is why we don’t normally tell people to upgrade their kernel on ROCK. There is usually more that needs to be done that most of us would never figure out on our own.

I would still suggest trying another distro’s live version of their stable OS, but even then, it would have to be very up to date to handle your motherboard. You might possibly be able to run ROME instead of ROCK. You could test it by using our latest ISO and booting to the live environment and testing it out. New hardware requires new software. I don’t know any way around that part.

I remember seeing some reports from ROME users with a similar wifi issue and there was an update for either networkmanager or plasma6-nm that fixed it. I don’t recall any Rock users reporting this so I doubt it was pushed to Rock, but most Rock users have older hardware.

I know that a lot of people want that stability of a point release and don’t like the hectic changes of a rolling release like Arch or Tumbleweed. ROME rolls much slower than they do. I find it to be more stable, yet it still keeps me up to date.

I finally bit the bullet and installed ROME. What a relief it was when it resolved all three of the main issues I posed here and more.

I did have to reset the bios upon updating the kernel due to the controller dropping again, but besides that it has been smooth sailing so far.

Some other niceties came about as well! The iGPU bug is no longer relevant and I don’t have to restart upon a LUKS password prompt failure as another is offered. :smile:

If you’re someone facing a similar issue I’d recommend you do the following:

  • Strongly consider using ROME if you have newer hardware (<2 years old).
    My motherboard is nearly two years old yet it still caused me grief. Analyze your parts and make an informed decision.

  • Backup everything to the best of your ability, specifically your home folder.

  • Make a list of everything you installed or removed, preferably also make a script or command to add/remove it back in your new install. You can check dnf package changes with dnf history list or the history button in DnfDrake.
    Beware that some issues may arise from plopping your home folder straight into a new installation. For example: I had to delete a session lock file in /home/user/.config/BraveSoftware/Brave-Origin/ to get it working.

  • Don’t panic if something isn’t working in the live environment. You likely can fix it later or it will be resolved by an update available. My Wi-FI wasn’t functioning live, but it worked when ROME was installed to disk.

  • Sort out potential issues and test everything before settling down. This would have saved me time. :sweat_smile:

I will agree that it is quite easy to do a fresh install when you get good backups of your home folder and a few other things. I just wiped out my old install on EXT4 and reinstalled on BTRFS in the past couple of hours. Smooth as silk.

Remember to upgrade your system with the ‘System Upgrade’ in Application Menu>System>System Update OR in Konsole with:

sudo dnf dsync --allowerasing --refresh

Pay attention and if it looks like --allowerasing would remove something you do not want removed ask in this forum with a descriptive title and the necessary information.

And above all enjoy your OMLx ROME system.
