When running OM Lx in LIVE mode with 6.13-desktop-30mv2590 getting it to boot to desktop takes excessively long time and Welcome window is unusable and covered in graphic artifacts as can be seen in one of linked photos. Bug report utility that activated on it’s own also failed to generate automatic report. I tested this on several builds with following results:
B650M D3HP (f33) + Ryzen 7 9800X3D (integrated GPU): no bug, much faster booting to live mod
B555M DS3H + Ryzen 7 5800X + RX 7800 XT: no bug
As an experiment I made full install on integrated graphic configuration that had no detectable issues in LIVE mode (B650M D3HP (f33) + Ryzen 7 9800X3D (integrated GPU)). Install completed successfully however after the install I could not open Welcome window at all, either from desktop icon or control panel. Handful of other apps I tested seemed to work fine.
I use singe 3440x1440 monitor connected with display port cable, freesync / adaptive sync activated. As for graphics server I am not sure what that is. Image I used for live test and install states it is x11.
I tested this build in LIVE mode with similar end results.
When monitor was plugged in to DP of discrete graphic card (RX 7800 XT) result was same as with build I tested yesterday, with protracted boot time and Welcome window producing identical graphic glitches. This build had more aps preinstalled so I tested many of them and they seem to work fine with exception of Help Center window that had similar graphical glitches as Welcome window. Images of bugged widows can be seen in link below.
I again also tested new build with monitor plugged in to motherboard DP and therefor running on integrated GPU of 9800X3D. In that case system booted in to LIVE mode super fast and both Welcome and Help Center windows did not show any obvious graphical issues. Image below:
Results were similar to earlier x11 variants tests, in that “Welcome” and “Help Center” work when ruining from integrated GPU, and are malfunctioning when running from discrete GPU. However there were minor differences, for example boot was much faster on discrete GPU, and there was no popup “KWin - Crash Handler” that was showing up in x11 tests. Also instead displaying artifacts “Welcome” and “Help Center” now display empty field:
and if windows are moved then they generate artifacts like this:
BDW is any of the developers and maintainers want me to do quick LIVE test of some new or old build that might resolve the issue I’d be happy to do it.
Its a completely new build assembled few days ago when I updated motherboard BIOS with newest version available at Gigabyte web page (version F33 dated Mar 17, 2025 ).
It’s also time to start looking at logs. There is a pinned post about getting better support that has what you need to provide. It is starting to look like kernel issues.
Thanks for suggestions. I did some testing attempting to replicate problems in those links.
Test 1:
At my work computer I was able to test same OpenMandriva Wayland and kernel 6.13 configuration I tested yesterday at my home computer. Test included some 10 minutes video replay on waterfox in attempt to replicate freezes mentioned in arch forums. Overall everything worked well on that computer, fast boot in to Live environment, Welcome and Help widows worked, no video play problems. Work PC configuration is B450M-HDV R4.0 + Ryzen 7 5800X + RX 6600 + dual 1080p monitor setup.
Test 2:
on my home computer i tested openmandriva.5.0.1-lxqt.x86_64.iso with lxqt desktop i got from this link:
It failed almost immediately upon booting in to live environment by making the mouse pointer almost immovable. I could swing mouse over half a treble and pointer would move barely few pixels. Some people in arch forums mentioned hawing similar problem with frozen mouse, but I cant tell if reason is the same because i don’t know what kernel that build uses as I could not open any of the apps or console.
Test 3:
On my home computer I tested openmandriva.5.0-plasma.x86_64.iso from the same sourceforge link. It worked fine, no issues with Welcome or Help widows that were present in ROME builds, and it booted fast. I could not find any problems with that old Mandriva build using kernel 6.6.2.
Test 4:
In my home PC I also tested Siduction KDE that comes with Plasma6.2.4, x11 and kernel 6.12.6. It too worked fine including KDE Help window.
Given those tests and complaints on arch forums it does seem that kernels 6.13.x have issues with some AMD configurations.
Good news everyone, I think I found a workaround. I got an idea that issue could be caused by some kind of broken interaction between integrated and discrete GPU triggered by kernel 6.13 so I disabled integrated GPU in bios. And it worked! Glitches in Welcome and Help window are no longer there!
Anyhow it think this will be good enough solution for most people until kernel fix is out, so if anyone comes up with similar issue tell him to try disabling integrated GPU.
Also thx for help.
P.S. How do I change the title to add [resolved] or [workaround available]?
