The Steam Client is crashing

Hi there, a week or so, my Steam client on Linux updated and now the login screen looks like the client from the Beta Channel on Windows and unfortunately, it crashes now at the splash screen during “loading user data”. It is like 75% there according to the progress bar but never finishes.

I already tried re-installing it using both dnfdragora and Discover on OpenMandriva LX 4.3 but no avail.

I also messaged Steam Support but they wrote back they only support Ubuntu, lol

I do not use Steam so don’t know that much about this. @AngryPenguin would know more about issues related to Steam.

Was that an OpenMandriva (omv) package? FWIW looks like the steam package in OMLx 4.3 is dated 10-Dec-2021 so that could not be what you are talking about could it? I am fairly positive there have not been any OMLx package updates for OMLx 4.3 recently.

Reinstalling steam rpm?

Guess: It is possible that the system libraries in Lx 4.3 are to old for your steam client. You could try installing ROME. You can try upgrading Lx 4.3 to ROME but a fresh install is always preferred.

It is difficult to troubleshoot a problem if we don’t have logs or some kind of information that tells what user was doing and what happened. That is why we pinned this.

thanks for your reply @ben79!

Down to your questions/comments/guesses:

What kind of package/method I used to install Steam years ago, I honestly don’t remember, but I do know it was either an RPM package or over Discover, certainly not over dnfdragora.

And bear in mind that the steam client updates itself even outside of the repository, it checks for update itself at each startup, and even did so today, including re-installing its environment and re-configurating itself.

The writing that it would stop working in the OpenMandriva LX 4.3 Rome release was on the wall, as when I temporarily switched to the Steam Beta branch, it did the same troubles that I have now since the beta became final.

I am on the fence about updating to the Rolling release of 5.0 as when I tried it half a year ago, it stopped booting and I had to recover it from a prior backup. I might as well wait till 5.0 is gold and turned into the Rock release.

If that still won’t resolve it, I will seek for Steam logs as suggested.

I am no help with Steam, don’t use and don’t have it installed. All I know is to point users to this. You might get your question answered quicker at OpenMandriva Chat.

Hi. Steam works fine on ROME (rolling release) and Cooker - tested by myself. 4.3 release is old and sometimes there were problems, especially when steam recently implemented a massive update.

So my suggestion is upgrade OpenMandriva to Rolling.
If you want stay on rock, then you can try running steam from konsole. Just open any terminal and type steam.
After steam crash there should be something in terminal output. Paste is here.

A post was split to a new topic: SDDM login screen incorrect after upgrading to ROME

Apart from the fact that after the upgrade I only have MATE (Gnome) left to choose from a defaced Login screen (see split topic), Steam still crashes during loading.

Here is the terminal output as requested:

Edit: I was typing this as @Nafcom posted. Sorry folks.

Moderator: Just split a post out for an unrelated topic.

@Nafcom did let us know in that post:

Also Steam still doesn’t start still so no juice there.

To do anything about that we will need more information. The suggestion @AngryPenguin are the best place to start. No secret @AngryPenguin know a heck of a lot more about Steam than I do.

see above, I just provided what @AngryPenguin asked for earlier
