OM Rock with Cosmic

I just installed Rock 6 back onto a Framework 13. This time in the Welcome center I went to desktops and decided to try out Cosmic. I have to say that after spending some time on it and getting everything setup, that it really seems like System 76 have done excellent work on this. I know the lead developer on this is a talented fascist but System 76 says publicly that they do not push any political agendas, and so I feel like Cosmic is worth giving a shot.

It is downright solid. I really like it. Any one else messing with it, and have some warnings about things that break or will break?

I played around with it on Pop_OS! a while ago and only had issues with the mouse in some games like Beyond All Reason (I believe it was when trying to move the camera up). I think last time I played around with COSMIC, it had been fixed.

Also, since I was using Wayland at that point instead of x11, I had issues with the JetBrains IDEs; I had to add some piece of configuration but it was fine.

Overall, I had a pretty good experience with it even though it is beta or whatever it is now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That isn’t exactly true:

Are you kidding? That is a short and benign CoC that doesn’t talk about DEI or politics. Are you finding fault with “Be considerate” or maybe “smart people can make really cool things they love”?

Any CoC can and will be weaponized, in fact, the intent behind their creation in the first place is to weaponize them.
The very idea that people can be banned for not meeting some random guy’s criteria for “politeness” or “respectfulness” is absurd.
The best CoC is no CoC.

Drop by my house for a visit. There is no published CoC, but if you violate my idea of “politeness” or “respectfulness” you will be banned from my home. Even OMLx is going to be this way. Even though there is no published CoC that I can find for OMLx, I guarantee that if someone gets nasty enough they will be shown the door.

The reason why CoC’s came into existence is poor parenting. Kids no longer get taught to be polite and respectful so it has to be written down for children in adult bodies to read and be forced to abide by. I cannot fault a company like System76 for publishing that kind of CoC to have something to fall back onto when someone is acting childish. Demanding that no one have a written CoC seems a bit…

That as precisely why CoCs are only useful as tools to enforce some kind of authoritarian BS. The claim that a hard-coded definition of what it means to “step outta line” is needed is a pretext, nothing more, nothing less.

I am not demanding anything, If some group wants to have a CoC, I don’t care, I will just do my best not to associate with them, just like I try not to associate with nagging Karens and the like. I am merely stating things as I see them, and how I have witnessed them play out. Please try not to put words into my mouth like that.

You’re right, I leaned a little too heavy on “The best CoC is no CoC.”

Below the being nice and feel good stuff:

“Our Code of Conduct is based on Ubuntu’s Code of Conduct.”

I am a bit surprised that the last line wasn’t posted in lawyerese.

Lawyerese. Is that a valid word?

Anyway, it is not a big secret that Ubuntu is Wokeness that “went to plaid.”

With a CoC, power lies in the hands of a person, or some kind of committee.
We all know they type of people who like to wield this kind of power, who are attracted to these kinds of positions.
Without a CoC, power lies in the hands of every member of the community, were it should be.
Power, unlike wealth, is always a zero-sum game.
CoCs are a power game, always have been, always will be.

I believe the commonly used term is “legalese.”

I know nothing and will admit to that fact.

Nope, I’m not kidding. I don’t invest time or money into projects and products that sanitize speech and treat their audience like defective children.

You might consider it benign and that is your opinion. I made no suggestion to anyone about whether or not they should use it or not. Just that System76 is either riding a trend and not paying attention to the outcome, or is willfully deceiving people with false virtue. They do have ESG stuff all over their corporate ethos pertaining to net zero carbon and other nonsense.
