If this keeps up, I think more and more distros are going to be modifying the kernel.
Rust-based CLI tools are getting a lot of fixes and improvements, which is good. This might even motivate people to improve the GNU coreutils.
Adding available compiler flags can be helpful in a lot of situations. The kernel is meant to interact with hardware, so this could actually speed up the adoption of new hardware drivers.
They technically do already. Each distro manages their own soft fork to maintain fixes that haven’t hit upstream yet, or ever will.
That being said, a hard fork would need to build new brand recognition. It might be less work to make BSD do things.
From what I’m seeing from Ubuntu integrating rust coreutils into 25.10 it needs to stay in everyone’s testing branch for the time being. There’s been lots of bugs and exploits discovered. No one wants that in production. I don’t think 6 months of testing is enough to test and correct those tools in time for an LTS release. I wouldn’t want to run with them on any of my servers.
Maybe, one day, the OpenMandriva folk will start experimenting with BSD. MandrakeBSD has a nice ring to it. In the meantime, I trust the OML team to make good decisions, just like they have for decades.
The rust foundation has a woke CoC, and no standard.
I don’t know what they’ll do to wreck things, but I can trust them to wreck things.
I disagree. They do have a standard. Their standard is to never worry about anything that Rust destroys when it makes contact with something.
“How bad can it get? Wokeness is superior and will triumph over all! Sieg Heil!”
Exhibit A: Yesterday’s Internet train wreck of Big Bayou Canot proportions. The Rust programmers were the towboat that pushed the barge into the bridge crossing a river channel that was closed to shipping. At Big Bayou Canot, the barge pilot was not trained in how to use radar, lacked a compass and a navigation chart, and then failed to inform the proper authorities in a timely manner (immediately). With Rust, the programmers take shortcuts with no regard for what happens next. If anyone checks into what happens, “it is someone else’s fault!”
At Big Bayou Canot, the barge pilot was found to be not guilty due to “lack of training.” Plus, Amtrak should not have been doing the impossible for Amtrak, running on time.
With Rust, everyone involved yesterday will be given a free pass because “insert pathetically lame excuse here.” Wokeness demands free passes for anyone who follows the wokeness cult. Blame must be shifted whenever wokeness is involved. Fixing the problem and holding people accountable is verboten! Sieg Heil!
