I’m trying to decide on which email client to use, and was curious what you guys like using.
(Now that I’ve switched to OpenMandriva and have a freshly installed system, this seemed like a good time to reevaluate my email options.)
I originally used Thunderbird for a long time, but I stopped using it after the big update where they “modernized” the UI.
I didn’t like the new UI, and it felt more buggy overall.
Then I tried Sylpheed and Claws Mail. One of them refused to connect to my email provider. (I forget which one, because they are so similar and this was a couple years ago.)
The other one was okay, but the lack of HTML mail seemed limiting, since so many people send it nowadays. And it felt a bit clunky.
Then I used Evolution until now. It’s decent enough, but one thing that bugs me is that it always has processes running in the background, even when the app itself is not running.
Maybe I can block them from starting, somehow. Also, sometimes the notifications stop showing. (Perhaps this was specfic to Debian. Haven’t tried it on OM yet.)
Some others I’ve heard of, but not tried yet:
Kmail - I’ve heard a lot of bad things about akonadi being slow and buggy, which kinda scared me away.
Geary - It looks okay, although the UI seems a bit simple and phone-like for my taste.
Trojita - Apparently, it doesn’t support multiple email addresses.
Kube - Can’t find much info on it. Seems like it might be abandoned?
Of course webmail is also an option, but my provider (Startmail) always logs me out after a while and there’s no option to stop that, which is annoying.
Also, I like to have a local client so that I can get desktop notifications and stuff.
There are only two email clients I am willing to use outside of web.
Apple’s Mail and Thunderbird.
I tried Kmail and Geary way back, but I don’t know, they didn’t feel “tight” enough.
Maybe it has changed now, but I am mostly a web guy for emails.
Thunderbird stole my print screen key in Windows once. F- Thunderbird. It’s personal now.
I’m trying to transition to neomutt. So far, I’m too stupid to figure out the config, but I figure if I stare at the manpages and docs on their site long enough it’ll eventually sink in.
I’ve been using Evolution on PopOS with Gnome for the past 4 years. It has had its bugs displaying mails that come and go, but it was been satisfactory with fairly good spam filtering. Here on OM running KDE it doesn’t integrate as well as I can’t get it into dark mode nor can I get it to stop playing a sound when it receives mail.
Apple Mail was great for 6 years before that. Thunderbird was great for the 6 years before that. I’ve tried KMail in the past and don’t recall why I gave up on it. I might try it again soon and compare to Thunderbird to see which works best in OM KDE.
Claws mail is not yet compliant for OAuth 2.0 authentication, It failed to connect my gmail, and Google requires Google workspace tools to allow less secure apps option.
So far, I stay with thunderbird (not too happy about that), waiting for a real option to show up.
I’ve been using Thunderbird for a long time now and before that I used Mozilla Mail and Netscape Mail. My justification to stick with it is that I’ve been upgrading it since that time and I can justo copy my user folder to another place to have all my mail accounts up and running. Even on Linux I just need to adjust some lines in the prefs.js and I’am good to go. I’ve thinking to give it a chance to Betterbird and need to take a good look on it, but my confort zone is so confy.
I use Proton Mail so I just use the web interface. When I did use a client I liked Thunderbird and Evolution. I think the first email client I ever used was Eudora on Windows 3.11. I don’t think it exists anymore.
Cool Story Bro… A co-worker of mine registered the domain “endora.com”. ENdora was a common misspelling/mispronunciation of EUdora. So he got tons of mail sent to support@endora.com and he would troll the heck out of those poor people. Ok, maybe not so cool…

I tend to move between Betterbird and Mailspring. I am interested in efficient and power saving clients as I have about 8 email clients that I need to sync via IMAP. Don’t need the client always performing network actions etc.
Both of these seem to do a pretty good job.

I have to admit that I can’t seem to get Mailspring running on OM. There is a flatpak for it but it is crashing at start up. It says it needs lipappindicator but when I install lib64appindicator it still complains about needing the dependency.
So I am just using Betterbird through a flatpak as well.
Back in the day I used Thunderbird and never had any major complaints. Over the years I just kind of settled on web mail and today it is Proton which I actually like very much.
