Using Vulkan graphics backend for Brave significantly improves performance

Just wanted to post this info here for other users in case it’s useful. Changing the graphics backend for Brave significantly improves performance (snappiness, frame rates, etc.). This was new to me as I haven’t had to do this on other distributions, but when I switched to OM and started using Brave I noticed that it wasn’t performing like it normally did.

This can be accomplished by doing the following:

  1. Enter brave flags by entering brave://flags.
  2. Search for “vulkan”.
  3. Change the value to Enabled.

Testing it now. Thank you.

I don’t know if I see any difference, but it does seem to work.

Are you using a high refresh display?

This install is only a couple weeks old. I just checked and it is 60hz. I had it at 120hz before.

Wow thank you, Brave took very (very very) long to start up in Rock 5.0 and thanks to your Tip it starts significantly faster now.

Just a heads up to anyone seeing this, I had to search for “vulkan” with a “k,” not a “c.” Also, while I had no complaints about Brave’s performance before, this change definitely made the app significantly quicker. It now opens almost immediately…even if I had several tabs open from a previous session :+1:

Thanks Mike. I edited the title and the OP’s post as it is probably too old for @tristanbiesecker to edit it.

I have been seeing some instances of brave freezing while using it. I disabled hardware acceleration and that seemed to prevent brave from freezing. Anyone else noticing this?

I have been seeing some instances of brave freezing while using it.

 Interesting! I haven’t noticed any issues of kinda, and I have hardware acceleration enabled.

Notice:

This works on any Chromium based browser. It is also a workaround for this issue in another thread. If we see anyone with this issue, please advise them of this workaround.

Cool, but if you have Mangohud running globally it’s going to start showing a metrics overlay when you open the browser  …just something I noticed right off the bat when I just turned this on.
