Assuming the police are willing to get involved. My life experience says it depends on the jurisdiction. Places where you would think the police would get involved will simply dismiss it as no big deal because nothing physical that they can see had happened. In other jurisdictions, not only will the police get involved, but they will quickly shift blame to the victim.
Finding legitimate and honest police today is becoming very difficult.
I’ve actually been concerned about something like this happening to OM. By getting Lunduke’s attention in a good way, and knowing how far left the geo-political spectrum the world of Linux can be, I can see how some very talented but morally misguided people could set their sites on the program. I don’t get the impression that that is what happened in this instance, but I know it must be something the devs consider.
It should be minimal risk, however, last year I almost found out otherwise.
A friend hands me a Chromebook, fairly beat up, and tells me that it needs to be reset because it is locked up. Not his, it belongs to someone at work. He gives me her phone number to find out exactly what happened. It is late in the day. Deal with it tomorrow.
The next day I call the number, find out it is a divorced woman with a teenage daughter who is “dating” an adult male who put kiddie porn on the Chromebook and now she wants it off. While I am able to reset a Chromebook back to factory specs, I am not going to get involved in giving a free pass to this guy by doing a reset.
Off I go to the police in the village where she lives. I explain to the officer what is going on. He assumes I am dealing in kiddie porn when all I want is for them to take that Chromebook off my hands and investigate this possible kiddie porn mess. Two hours later after explaining to the police chief a dozen times how I got involved in this and what I did and didn’t do, he finally figured out that I am just a bystander in this line of fire. He took the Chromebook. Thankfully, there was a Culver’s along the route going home so I can get a stress reliever.
Three months later I get a phone call, wondering what happened to the Chromebook. I told her to go see her local police. Here is the case number that I was given. Have fun explaining.
We give police far too much credit for being able to use common sense and logical thought processes. Especially now that many departments have DEI hiring policies.
Unrelated but still relevant, this past week there was the instance of the Fort Worth, Texas local police telling a preacher that he has no right to free speech as defined in the First Amendment. Which I find very interesting. I believe it happened outside of a gender confusion event being held in a public park. This tells me the Fort Worth police are extremely woke and have a DEI policy as well as being fully incapable of following the Constitution. The US Constitution clearly violated their agenda. This makes me wonder how many others can no longer be trusted to follow the law.
