OpenMandriva keeps freezing the whole machine

Hello,

I’ve just installed OpenMandriva 5.0 (Iodine) (Rock) and the graphical environment keeps freezing to the point where I have no choice but to hard reset. I cannot even get to another virtual console to even use the command-line. I’ve checked dnf and there are no updates availble for me to install.

Eg.

While I understand that a lot of work goes into creating a distro, and it isn’t just a matter of building a few packages and that’s it; the developers of OpenMandriva claim that it is “stable”, but clearly this is not the case. And while I wouldn’t expect, for example, Debian Testing to be “stable”, hence the word “testing”; if you are going to claim your distro is “stable” then make sure it is, BEFORE promoting it as “stable”, please. As my computer is not usable if it’s going to keep freezing for no apparent reason, and at any time. This isn’t good enough guys, I’m sorry, it is not. And unless thing really start to improve, then I’m going to have to switch distro’s, as I need my system working, not randomly freezing up on me. I’ve had to first type this post in KWrite in case it did once again freeze up on me half way through once again. I’m using the KDE desktop environment, and I’ve just had to hard reset AGAIN.

Can the developers of OpenMandriva please actually TEST things before including them in future, BEFORE using them and putting said version into the repo, please. As clearly that’s lacking when the problem I’m talking about can happen within literally two minutes of logging in, without me even really doing much if anything.

Welcome @james to OpenMandriva and our forum. This forum is for users of OpenMandriva Linux operating systems.

We are a small group. All the contributors and developers here are unpaid volunteers.

You are welcome to talk to our developers at OpenMandriva Chat.

The first thing when a new user has an issue is to look in the documentation for OMLx. OpenMandriva wiki and Forum Resources guide.

If you don’t find what you are looking for try an Internet search (googling). One can find out a lot from documentation or forum posts at other Linux distros. If user finds something written for another distro but you have some doubt ask at OpenMandriva Chat.

For serious technical issues and package/feature requests please file a bug report here.

Hello,
is it in virtual machine (VirtualBox?) or real hardware?
x11 or wayland session?

Please read How to get better results when posting about problems

No it is not a VM - I can’t even use any VM’s as the package for Virtualbox does not even include the kernel drivers, and if it does, they do not build (and yes, I do have the kernel development packages installed, for the kernel version I’m running), therefore I’m running it on bare-metal. And no, it’s not a problem with hardware, as the old version of OpenMandriva did not have any of these issues - these issues have only appeared since installing OpenMandriva 5.0.

So it is once again most certainly people not testing newer versions of things before packaging them and putting them into the repo’s. Firefox from the repo’s also segfaults randomly, I can’t even build Virtualbox from the .run file, as it refuses to build the kernel drivers, even though I once again have the relevant kernel development packages/headers installed.

As I also need Virtualbox working as well, and it would be nice if I could just install an actual working version of it from the repos, rather than having to build it myself (or try to in this case).

Again, one should not be having any of these issues where the developers of OpenMandriva claim it’s “stable” and it’s not a hardware issue with my machine. If it were a hardware issue, I would have been having the same problems well before now. And I’ve been using Linux for long enough to know, or to be able to figure out if it’s hardware or software at fault. So please just understand that.

When are updated packages going to released to fix these issues?
Or should I just start looking for a different distro?

Edit: I believe it’s an X11 session.

Oh, so it is not possible that we do test and use OMLx ourselves but we are a small group that does not have your hardware to test on? There are users using what you claim does not work and was not tested. Users that use it because they like it and find it to be stable. There are people testing to the best of our ability and resources. Our resources are admittedly limited. As posted above we are a small group, that is both advantageous and disadvantageous. But there is a big difference in resources, people involved, and hardware available to test compared to Debian.

You haven’t given us anything to fix other than that all OM contributors are lazy idiots. We may have some disagreement on that…

If you do want some things fixed could we calm the rhetoric and get down to nuts and bolts?

Nuts and bolts would be things like system logs so we can get to a cause of the freezes. Could you please run these commands and post the files created?

$ dmesg > dmesg.txt

$ inxi -F > inxi.txt

$ sudo journalctl > journal.txt

Those will create the files dmesg.txt, inxi.txt, and journal.txt which you can post here. Maybe with logs we can find a cause and then find something to work with/on.

If you are any user are experiencing issues with any version of OMLx we certainly do wish to find the cause of the issue and correct it if at all possible.

Please answer some basic questions

Where did you download the ISO file and which one exactly (link and filename)?
Did you verify the file to confirm ISO integrity?
How did you transfer the image to the USB pendrive?
Booting to Live mode works properly or same issues as in installed system?
Any chance that re-installing will make the things better?

,
Random notes:

I can’t even build Virtualbox from the .run file

No need

it would be nice if I could just install an actual working version of it from the repos

sudo dnf --refresh install virtualbox

,

Firefox from the repo’s also segfaults randomly

rpm -q firefox

run firefox from console and post the output

,

people not testing newer versions of things

I personally have cooker, ROME and 5.0 installed on different partitions and daily using sometimes one and sometimes other.
To be honest they are all pretty well working

Or should I just start looking for a different distro?

That’s an option too, if it’s what you wish.

Incorrect. The kernel modules are included. After sudo dnf --refresh install virtualbox you have to reboot or modprobe the virtualbox kernel modules.

$ sudo modprobe vboxdrv
$ sudo modprobe vboxnetflt
$ sudo modprobe vboxnetad

After either rebooting or modprobing the modules virtualbox will then work.

Edit: I use VirtualBox for testing things with all versions of OMLx nearly every day, And I test on hardware, that hardware being the one laptop I currently have

Addendum:

FWIW I make strong use of VirtualBox in each system I run because this lazy and idiot person, as you have implicitly stated, is testing almost every new ISO we build (cooker, rolling and rock).
Never had any issue.

Right :+1:

Hi @james

Thank you for your feedback. I understand you are not satisfied with your last experience with OpenMandriva, so please go ahead and switch distro.
No shame in being disappointed, and we are clearly not going anywhere with this discussion.

The support section is primary available to get help, not to complain. I guess you can complain while being helpt, as explained by @ben79 there are a few rules to follow to let @rugyada or other contributors help you. (Giving a few info of your system, filling a bug report, etc…)

Thank you for trying OpenMandriva Lx 5 or being a user, and best of luck for your future.

The freeze could be due to hardware acceleration by the video card. Try to disable it (compositing) in Plasma settings, switch to XRender.

Well, I tend to believe that if an user spent some time starting a topic and reporting what he/she/them feel not working maybe h/s/t does care.
To just give up and leave is not fruitful in my opinion.
OpenMandriva developers are glad to receive bug reports, they actually exhort the users to file them in order to fix issues. But they must be proper bug reports.

On the other hand a feedback just full of complaints, and not even that much veiled blaming, without providing any info useful to get help, makes me wonder what one wants to achieve with it…

Last but not least, please show a bit of respect - if not gratitude - towards people who work unpaid just for passion and make avalable stuff that you can get for free and enjoy if you like it.

That said, can we restart from scratch this discussion?
We are looking forward to read requested informations from the OP.

I don’t know if I was cursed but this happened to me this morning :sleepy: It was frozen for a long minute. Everything started by default, the notification popped up (Wifi started, VPN launched, …) and then stuck. I could only move the mouse.

Looking at the journal (journalctl -k) the cause was the proprietary apple_bcm kernel module I installed myself. I need to use a “virtual USB host controller” to access the built-in the keyboard / sound / micro / camera on the MacBook Air. Nothing related to OM core.

Needed to reboot for me and everything’s back to normal :sunglasses:

@artenaki Indeed disabling compositor might be a start, I’m curious on how do you do that if you can’t access the control panel. You launch / boot in “safe mode / recovery mode” ? :thinking:

Not to say systemd is not perfect in every respect but that is normal solution to problems like that. Sometimes something does not go right in systemd and it is best to just reboot and let it start over.
