OMLx Crashing after startup

Hello,

  • _OpenMandriva Lx version:_25.01

  • Desktop environment (KDE, LXQT…): 6.8.1

  • Description of the issue (screenshots if relevant):

  • Relevant informations (hardware involved, software version, logs or output…):

Hi Everyone…

A question if I may, I’ve seen twice now after startup and getting into the DE that if I do not wait at least 1 minute and I start doing something then OM will crash out, both screens go black with the blinking cursor and that is it, I have to press the reset button, I am pretty sure this is a crash as nothing works after this.

No mouse no keyboard nothing. Where can I check to see what may be causing this. Also, when I went into system > about this system I can see that x11 is the Graphics platform, Is it not supposed to be Wayland?

System specs:
12 x AMD Ryzen 5 7500F
16Gig Ram
Nvidia GeForce RTX2060
512Gig NVME boot disk
2x SSD’s (240Gig / 512Gig)

Regards C

You will have less problems with x11. That being said, there are some regressions with the nvidia driver that we are aware of but they seem to affect certain cards. Some of them also have issues with the nouveau driver. Do you know if you installed the proprietary nvidia driver? If not, you can enable it from the Welcome screen if you are able to get access to it.

If your system crashes check the keyboard by pressing Caps Lock or Num Lock. If the lights turn on and off, it’s not a total system crash and you may be able to press Ctrl + Alt + F4(F5… etc) to get a terminal login.

OM isn’t playing nicely with nvidia gpus. Have you already tried installing the proprietary drivers. If not i would try that fisrt and see if it fixes the problem. You will need to enable the non-free repo with the repo selector in the OM-welcome app. Then install the driver from the configure tab then hardware tab, you should see the nvidia logo. Also i think x-11 is recomended some people are still having problems with wayland.

I am running X11 with an Nvidia 2070Super and I can play Steam games, so I can verify that it works, but Wayland did not.

Hi Everyone, Yes, proprietary driver has been installed from the beginning…

Keyboard caps lock led is unresponsive after the crash.

But, I have seen that if I just give it some time to settle after entering the desktopthen it is ok…

Regards C

Wait for someone else to confirm this before trying, but I think this might help.

sudo dnf clean all; dnf clean all; dnf --refresh --allowerasing dsync

Then downgrade your nvidia driver to the previous version and see if that works.
sudo dnf dg nvidia
I don’t know the exact nvidia package name.

Good morning Lee!

Thank you, after work On Friday I will test this out. It does not matter if I have to redo everything it’s a learning curve. Thank you.

Regards C

Hi All Hope you are well. I did a clean install today of OMLx…
After installing the Nvidia driver I had a NOTICEABLE increase in Plasmashell crashes.

OM boots, gets to the user password screen and I enter my password and sometimes a few seconds after loading the desktop or minutes after loading the desktop the plasmashell will crash all on its own, other times the plasmashell will crash while I am starting up an application like dolphine or Konsol.

I installed KDbg and have a crash report that I will post below…

This has been happening on and off now for quite a few times. After the crash I type in ctrl+alt+F4 I then enter my user, my password and then type in sudo reboot now and then my password and the PC will reboot, sometimes the user password screen will come up after reboot and I can enter my password other times it will just crash right at the screen… As I am a total noob I do not know what to do here…

Any help welcome. Crash report below

EDIT:

I just plugged in my second screen and it crashed plasmashell again just by plugging in my second monitor.

Below a screenshot of the crashes so far. The log below of the newest one.

If you haven’t already, try the nvidia open driver. We have instructions for that pinned in Support under the nvidia call for testing topic.

x11 will be more stable than wayland. If you are using wayland primarily, also try hyprland. It may use less resources. (wayland just doesn’t work with acceptable performance on my GTX 960 with the closed nvidia driver at all)

We are using newer versions of drivers and kernels than most distros are, so please make sure your BIOS is up to date. If you are using nvme’s check for firmware updates (backup is up to you). We can’t anticipate what hardware people will use so make sure to unplug as much exotic hardware as you can to rule that out.

Failing all of that, start with Rock and see if these issue can be repeated. Even if you just run the live version and start plugging things into it (dual monitor, exotic hardware, etc).

Hi Zero, Thak"s I’ll look into that ,

Operating System: OpenMandriva ROME 25.01
KDE Plasma Version: 6.2.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.10.0
Qt Version: 6.8.1
Kernel Version: 6.12.9-desktop-1omv2490 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11
Processors: 12 × AMD Ryzen 5 7500F 6-Core Processor
Memory: 15.4 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060/PCIe/SSE2
Manufacturer: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd.
Product Name: MS-7E28
System Version: 1.0

As You can see I am running X11 I also did not choose a platform. Do not know where to choose this anyway.

I will say this though it definitely is the nvidia driver, It just crashed again major big.
I will attach the log down below again.

Thanks for all the input fellas I’ll get back to you all after trying the open driver, just a question, does the open driver make use of the cuda cores?

Regards C

On the login screen in the bottom left there is a dropdown menu to choose your session (Plasma, Plasma x11, hyprland, etc). It depends on what you have installed as to what will show up.

Yes, both drivers make use of the closed userspace drivers and programs because they depend on it. The only open part is the kernel module and some of the parts they open sourced and we opted to build instead of taking out of the .run file.

Hi Zero thanks, I am having a bit of an issue trying to find the referenced post, do you perhaps have a link?

Regards C

Here it is:

Hi Zero,

Right I ran this line sudo dnf in nvidia nvidia-kmod-open-desktop

How do I check what driver is running?

Regards C

It will remove the closed nvidia-kmod-desktop during install and you reboot. The packaging isolates which driver. After the reboot you should be using the open driver.

Thanks Zero.

I ran:

 lsmod | grep nvidia

The output is:

Just an idea, does anyone think it worth while trying the gnome iso maybe the problem is with plasma?

https://sourceforge.net/projects/openmandriva/files/release/ROME/24.12/openmandriva.rome-24.12-gnome.x86_64.iso/download

I’m about to try this to see if some problems i am having are still there with Gnome.
