Matrix Outage

We appreciate your patience while Matrix is learning how to run a chat server and database service.

Database incident

Update - We are in the process of restoring the matrix.org database from a backup. The matrix.org homeserver will be offline until this has been completed

Identified - We’ve identified an issue with the matrix.org database

Incidently, this is what real businesses use with real money they earned:

Matrix issue still not solved.
As an emergency we may want to join the Libera.chat IRC channels (?)

I set up some freenode rooms a few days ago. When they decided to do the UN’s bidding.

This is a similar incident to another service I used in the past. Get funding from grants (your money) to care about ESG, spend the money on things that have nothing to do with providing a secure, available, and consistent product or service, and have a massive outage that occurred due to a foreseeable cause. They had server connection issues for months. The other service I am referring to had the same problem.

Exactly like crypto. It’s so cool because it’s crypto, but they explain its worth in fiat currency. It all comes from heavy focus on the frontend and zero knowledge of the backend. “decentralized” is just a marketing buzzword. You still need a central mechanism to handle authentication in both cases.

konversation has our libera-chat cooker channel already set.
(tbh I have no memory on how to join freenode rooms  )

The server is irc.freenode.net and uses the same ports and join setup as Libera, because all Libera did was fork the freenode code and created Libera. Well, they fixed all the things they couldn’t be bothered to for the years they worked/volunteered for freenode, including exploits. Not before taking advantage of them while exiting freenode. But, I digress…

The room names are the same as matrix. Nick registration is required.

Joined both. Looks like there’s only me and you, @zeroability , in the Freenode, but there are a bunch of people in Libera.

I just wanted to ask if somebody could merge my pull.

How does one join and #openmadriva channel on freenode?

Edit: I think I figured this out. Are there any other channels besides #openmandriva?

I guess I broke the Matrix server when I joined a couple days ago.
Sorry.

All of the channels are there. Same names.

I don’t think anyone is there. When the bridge was abandoned, everyone ended up in the Matrix rooms or Telegram.

Based on this, I asked if anyone was there, and had a short conversation with someone named @HisShadow. So far, no one else has responded.

@ben79 is now in the Freenode channels. There are other names I recognize from the forum in Libera, but they haven’t responded.

Are we deciding to wait this out and go back to Matrix? Matrix points to a BlueSky account for updates now. :face_vomiting:

My guess is that we won’t be going back to IRC. I am not yet convinced that either Freenode or LiberaChat are up to the task anyway, the seem kind of lacking. Freenode tells me I have to confirm my email but it does not send the confirmation email. LiberaChat seems broken.

I don’t understand why you would need an email for Freenode? You just connect to it. You only need to register if you want to reserve your nick name. And since Libera runs on the same technology, it would be the same.

Matrix is back up

You used to have to have an email to register a nick. If it is no longer required they should stop telling me to look for a confirmation email.

Oh, I think it is. But for something temporary, why bother registering? That was my mindset.

My thought is why use Freenode when they do not seem to have there act together.
Forget Freenode.
