Incidently, this is what real businesses use with real money they earned:
I set up some freenode rooms a few days ago. When they decided to do the UN’s bidding.
This is a similar incident to another service I used in the past. Get funding from grants (your money) to care about ESG, spend the money on things that have nothing to do with providing a secure, available, and consistent product or service, and have a massive outage that occurred due to a foreseeable cause. They had server connection issues for months. The other service I am referring to had the same problem.
Exactly like crypto. It’s so cool because it’s crypto, but they explain its worth in fiat currency. It all comes from heavy focus on the frontend and zero knowledge of the backend. “decentralized” is just a marketing buzzword. You still need a central mechanism to handle authentication in both cases.
The server is irc.freenode.net and uses the same ports and join setup as Libera, because all Libera did was fork the freenode code and created Libera. Well, they fixed all the things they couldn’t be bothered to for the years they worked/volunteered for freenode, including exploits. Not before taking advantage of them while exiting freenode. But, I digress…
The room names are the same as matrix. Nick registration is required.
My guess is that we won’t be going back to IRC. I am not yet convinced that either Freenode or LiberaChat are up to the task anyway, the seem kind of lacking. Freenode tells me I have to confirm my email but it does not send the confirmation email. LiberaChat seems broken.
I don’t understand why you would need an email for Freenode? You just connect to it. You only need to register if you want to reserve your nick name. And since Libera runs on the same technology, it would be the same.
