Wouldn’t adopting BSD directory system and sysvinit be a major step towards splitting the difference?
Why should BSD be invested in? Genuinely curious.
Monolithic OS, kernel, driver and user tool are all develop and maintain together, also it is a bit more traditional to the UNIX like ideas, uses ufs or ZFS(ZFS is great btw), etc. , Linux is just the kernel and needs GNU tools

Competition in the market is good and breeds improvements for all competitors. As BSD and Linux expand their market share Microsoft and Apple are forced to adapt by making genuine improvements.

I use nano because all of the commands are printed at the bottom of the page. I’m not dumb, Vim is.

Serves you right for trying to use something that is by definition windowsphobic and applephobic, ableist (you have to be able to write it to a device and boot from that, you should just be getting a computer with everything already installed, it’s the only non-ableist approach) and racist (I presume you’ve heard of all the “race conditions” found in various pieces of software).

Well, ed is not installed by default either and since it is the aboriginal Unix editor, it has been practically genocided out of the distribution. This is blatant barbarism!

Noooo! Give me back the easy to use so I don’t have to use my brain to install a system myself! Who care about privacy or politics, I just want technology to work and be intelligent for me so I don’t have to be!!!111

Well, it didn’t use to matter what someone’s politics were, and we could all deal with someone else’s left/right/libertarian leanings as long as they could code/administer/support/etc the software. Linus could sit in his office and privately lick his bust of Vladimir Lenin for all I cared.

If the perpetually offended saw this, they would have melt downs seeing how many of us are making fun of them.
Just think. We have people of all stripes here. Yet we can ALL get involved in something like this, because we all get along and are not the type to get offended. It’s a great thing to be able to just not care.

I am glad I made this thread and I enjoyed reading it. Like one poster said you can feel the sarcasm oozing in the replies. My tongue in cheek OP betrays how helpful this community is. Ive seen people absolutely bending over backwards trying to help people here. Where the hell is RTFM? Oh right, when you dont have a COC it means you cant hide behind it.
Unlike many distributions we have a common cause.
I am pretty accepting of ideologies, of people, etc. But I was betrayed. My autistic kid came home one day from school convinced that he was a girl, because his teacher put it in his head. Ive never put up with any of it since then. I home school my kids now for the same reason I have OpenMandriva as my operating system, I dont participate in these shenanigans.
And what do I find? The least toxic Linux distro there is.
This doesn’t surprise me at all.
