AMDVLK GPU drivers for 7900XTX?

I’ve just recently got my hands on an HDMI capture card that is capable of up to 4k 60Hz, but I’m not able to capture 4k at anything higher than 30Hz in OBS Studio.

As I have to use a work provided computer for my day job but also my Linux computer alongside for some tasks I am trying to use OBS to effectively enable me to turn a Linux desktop workspace into a virtual second monitor for the work provided computer to flip back and forth between Linux and the work machine on a shared monitor.

I’m no expert with this kind of stuff so please forgive me, but my impression from searching online is that the AMDVLK drivers for Linux help to resolve these limitations.
When searching for the AMDVLK drivers for OM, it appears that the only option available is from 2023 and presently supports upto the 6000 series AMD GPU’s and not the 7900 XTX which I’m using.

Obviously as I mentioned, I’m no expert with this stuff, so if you know a better option to improve the display capture capabilities in OBS Studio please let me know

  • OpenMandriva Lx version: Cooker

  • Description of the issue (screenshots if relevant):

  • Relevant informations (hardware involved, software version, logs or output…):
    GPU: AMD 7900XTX.
Capture Card: AVerMedia HDMI 2.1, Live Gamer Ultra 2.1, GC553G2.
    Software: OBS Studio 31.0.1 (64-bit, Flatpak/Flathub install).
    Wayland

I am no expert on AMD cards, but I believe the HDMI interface licensing issues limit them to 4K 30FPS.

I could be wrong on this.

2k@60Hz would be fine but the picture is blurry and there is a bit of latency, so I’m curious if there are better solutions available to increase bandwidth and/or improve the picture quality which is primarily why I figured that optimisations for 4k@60Hz would also likely provide better capabilities at lower configurations. I assume that different encoders or something that are more GPU optimised may help?

I think Nvidia has something called ‘NVenc’ that helps with this?
I am curious if AMD GPU’s can achieve something similar on Linux?

Try using X11. Also I think mesa handles all of our vulkan stuff with amd.

There is way too many bugs on X11 for me to use X11 now. Honestly I’d rather use Windows than X11 on OpenMandriva. The cursor spasms are the most annoying as it just casually decides to change the pointer speed for no reason. Plus with a 4k 27" monitor, Fractional scaling is essential as 4k without 150% scaling is unreadable on that monitor, the apps don’t show the correct indicators/icon in the taskbar.
These are just a few that I notice immediately upon logging in with X11.

Feel free to contribute to make OpenMandriva better and better.
Many people find x11 more viable than wayland at this moment, so any help in this area of expertise is very welcome.

I have similar monitor, for me Plasma6 scaling (125% seems ok) and changing font size was enough on X11 and I can use it daily.

On Gnome fractional scaling with X11 is blurry and slow, on Wayland it is still blurry (but less) and faster.

December 2023 was the turning point for me where my config started to work better on Wayland than on X11.
Now it’s at the point where pretty much everything works better for me on Wayland, I would like to check if X11 with OBS makes any difference later when I’m not busy out of curiosity and if so why?
But it would make more sense for me to contribute to Wayland than X11 at this point given that Wayland works far better for my configuration.

Yes, I see now that I was not clear but that’s what I meant.

Is there anything specific that is commonly reported to be a Wayland bug today on AMD GPU’s?
Of course I can expect there may still be problems on Nvidia GPU’s with proprietary drivers.

Maybe it’s dependent upon the DE being used?

It has been reported wayland working better in Gnome desktop
(or without any issue at all? @AngryPenguin who is the gnome maintainer can be more precise).

ATM the most annoying bug with wayland is the copy/paste issue

Error copying in Wayland

Yeah, after taking a quick look at a couple of those threads, they appear to be more KDE on Wayland issues rather than general Wayland issues?

As far as I know, OBS is still buggy and slow under wayland, even the flatpak.

Update
I’ve just tested it on X11 and it is no different than on Wayland for me.
All of the core features work, the image just isn’t as crisp and low latency as it is when running it on Windows (sadly I do have a few devices including the Capture device that require Windows for firmware updates). The blur and latency is identical on both Wayland and X11.

This is 100% this issue. This is why when I was rebuilding up my Linux PC after it sat in storage since 2018, I bought a 1660Ti - the proprietary drivers play nicer with HDMI.

However the other issues with NVIDIA make it a total non-starter IMO. In fact, I just purchased a 6600XT to replace the 1660Ti.
