I seem to have trouble using the microphone on my webcam (Nexigo HelloCam pro) unless I boot into a fast but insecure kernel. Home computer, nothing too sensitive, no one else has access to anyway

It might make more sense to just address this issue. Unfortunately, this is pretty vague. We don’t know what you tried, if you are using the mixer in Plasma, or if it shows up as an audio device there.

Yes, t shows up fine in KDE settings and pwvumixer; no matter how many times I switch between input profiles, zoom and discord don’t seem to pick up sound from it.

Can you answer my question of what all fast but insecure mode turns off?

I don’t know specifically. My guess would be there is a setting (either in Plasma or a udev rule) that is keeping the USB device from being used. It’s primarily used for testing things like this, I think. I would see if there are others via a search engine that have issues like this with the camera model you are using.

“Fast but insecure” I’m pretty sure is just there to work better with fast boot bios. Have you tried disabling fast boot in BIOS? And have you tried plugging in your webcam after signing into a session?

Some search- fast but insecure seems to include ‘mitigations=off’
Fastboot is not enabled, I booted without insecure mode this morning and it worked, I’ll keep testing
