Wayland causes CPU max, X11 works fine

Hi,

I’m having an issue running Wayland. I’m using the latest ROME, kept up to date, and KDE. When I select Wayland at the login, it take a very long time to get to the KDE desktop. When it finally gets there, it very sluggish/slow. My CPU is maxed at 97%, sometimes 100%. I experience crashes and eventually I have to reboot, select X11, and everything is back to normal (fast, responsive, etc).

I’ve tried searching for issues/solutions. Trashed my system several times and had to reinstall from the ISO. I’m not super technical when it comes to Linux display tech. When I used to run Arch, Wayland worked fine with the KDE desktop. Since I’ve switched to OM it’s been X11 due to the issues.

Here’s my bug-report log if that helps.

I am not opposed to using X11 or Wayland, but I hear Wayland may be / is the future and is supposed to be faster than X11. Anyway, if you’ve seen this issue and fixed it, I sure could use your help.

Greetings.

When you create a post in this topic, there is a template that includes things that need to be done. While your log may help, we need as much information in the topic as you can. For further clarification, please see this topic:

Unfortunately, that is an apples to oranges comparison. We are not based on any other distro and we don’t use their packaging tools or patches. The version we have of Wayland will usually be at or close to their latest release and may or may not have fixes or reverts they applied so that it would work again after they add new features.

Since we recommend X11 by default, it means much of our small team focuses on making that reliable and stable, which you have discovered. While we are not opposed to people using it and testing it, it’s provided as-is and users will need to work with us to make that better by being involved and working with the upstream. We really don’t have the resources to focus on it full time.

I had the same issue with various distros and kwin_wayland (I am using the nvidia proprietary driver btw). Not too sure what it is but I have had it on several distros I have been tinkering with. OpenSuse Tumbleweed, One of the OM installs I did, and one or 2 others. Anyway I think its some upstream compositor bug. Currently I am on KDE-NEON using the 575 drivers from the nvidia repo(they recommend against it but its working good). Point is that’s the newest KDE experience you can get(except maybe for Arch&derivitives) and its juuuuuust working. Anyway I think right now with most distros KDE+Wayland+nVidia is flying awfully close to the sun. Just because Fedora, and Ubuntu Gnome are throwing out x11 doesn’t mean that Wayland is actually ready.
