Test of OMLx 3.02 Build 760

Hi all.

After some trouble I had using the “official” ISO (available in SourceForge) and after it was suggested here in the forum, I downloaded the Build 760 ISO, of OpenMandriva Lx 3.02.

First test: Live mode.
The good: Systems boots up. And boots up well. I got graphic mode, and it’s usable. No login screen, as I suppose to be, boot directly in live mode. inxi doesn’t says if I’m using nouveau, nvidia proprietary or another driver.
Problems: The blank and black screen still happens. But now, graphic screen “returns” after a few seconds most of the time, mainly (but NOT always) without the need of changing VT’s (vía Ctrl+Alt+F2 and Ctrl+Alt+F1).
Also, there are some “glitches” here and there, specially near the mouse pointer or the cursor.

It’s usable. Far from a “official release” should be to me. It’s more like a Beta or a RC.

I read somewhere that both problems (black screen and glitches) are from Plasma (so they’re not from OMV).

Ah!. I forgot something.

Now I have some icons in my desktop (Welcome, Donate, Install, Join). That didn’t happen with 3.01 in live mode nor installed.

Last time I installed 3.01 via the “start” menu (!!). There was no “install” icon. And it was no a “simple way”: “Start”, Applications, Tools, System tools and then “Install OMV”. Too long and not necessarily intuitive.

Switch to Layout: Desktop
right click on desktop > Desktop settings

While you are there, you can also pick up the proper background resolution for your display - if it’s not already

Aside note, it’s OpenMandriva Lx 3.02 or short OMLx 3.02 not OMV 3.02 :stuck_out_tongue:

Tx Rugyada.
I just “fixed” the subject.
I guess the missing icons was not a matter of resolution. In 3.01 I got 1920x1080 (when it worked) as here in 3.02.
Anyway, my 3.01 doesn’t work anymore. Now, I’m writing this from 3.02 Live, and I’ll install it in my HDD soon.

No, it’s because of desktop layout preference.

But I didn’t touch anything, in 3.01 or 3.02.

I guess that, trying to be “coherent”, it’s not good that one version select (automatically) something as default, and next minor revision (from 3.01 to 3.02) select something different !

I remember the comment from Gael Duval regarding almost all Linux distros: “Consistency, design… that doesn’t help applications to work, but that helps massive user adoption” (in A quick tour of OpenMandriva Lx 2014.0 (Phosphorus) - Gaël Duval (blog, mandrake, /e/ my data is my data...)).

I know, I know
Seems to be a random behaviour, sometimes the ISO will display the Desktop layout, sometimes the Folder View.
Not sure whether every time it happens it’s intentional or not.

The trick is: when you see the icons (Welcome, Donate, Install, Join) you are in Folder View layout, when you see the neat background you are in Desktop layout.[quote=“Sirius, post:6, topic:919”]

+1

I see this as random as well.

Well. I installed it.

Second test.

The good: Systems boots up and boots up well and in graphic mode !!. Still the glitches. No blank screen yet, but I only used it by 2 or 3 minutes. As with Live Mode, inxi doesn’t says if I’m using nouveau, nvidia proprietary or another driver.

It has much less troubles than 3.01. It would be good to me to use the proprietary nvidia driver (I’m a BOINC user, and I would like to use CUDA).

Forget what I said.

Blank screen finally appeared. “Solved” as before (changing VT and/or waiting some seconds).

Anyway, this is how it worked in Live Mode. I don’t expect to be different.

I still won’t install the nvidia driver.

Could you try using them first without installing nvidia driver?

Overall good to here that this one is working better for you.
And a great big thanks for providing information with your posts when warranted. It’s a big help.

Well.

I just discovered one problem with OMLx 3.02. I remember that it also happened with 3.01, at least when I installed it from the Live session (I also installed 3.02 from the Live session).

The question is OMLx 3.02 didn’t recognize my existing 2014.2 installation. After installation, Grub2 menu only included the 3.02 option. As I managed to access my original 2014.2 data (adding the partition to /etc/fstab via MCC), I copy the vmlinux, initrd, config (just in case) and symvers (just in case) files from the boot of 2014.2 in /boot. After copying the files, # update-grub2 recognized the files, and grub2-install then also recognized my 2014.2 installation.

I still don’t reboot, but I hope that, after that “copies”, I recover my 2014.2 option in the grub menu.

Edit: Yes. 2014.2 is again in my grub menu !

It does that sometimes, Running update-grub2 after install should correct. Copying the files isn’t necessary at least not here.

Edit: I should mention it sometimes does this for Windows or other Linux distros. Here update-grub2 after install fixes in all cases.

I tried update-grub2 alone before and it didn’t work. Maybe the cause was that Lx3 didn’t mount the partitions by default. But I didn’t try to mount them first and then update grub2.

Hi,

First of all, I confirm having had all the same observations as “Sirius” (Grub2-Icons-Artefacts mouse +my random net connections etc …) I don’t explain all this by random causes but by bad integration and instabilities of KDE5 to the system and/or also, by bad recognition of the material with Calamares/udev. I might be wrong…

Then running the distrib, a simple “update-grub2”; change of theme and cursor-sort; uninstall rpm “plasma-nm” (for net connections); and I can run the distribution perfectly for daily basic use …except total screen-blocks with long streaming videos -movies- (“Nouveau”, I think).

I also could have my “conky” working directly from “/etc/conky” since “conky-manager rpm” and my favourite theme Gotham is not in the repository.

What I wonder seing the screen of Rugyada is, if we have the same distro (?)! => “My” desktop backgrounds choice is really different:
Hers (above message) => https://discourse-static.openmandriva.org/uploads/default/original/1X/811f4e4f2a8382773611810c02220a732567ac49.jpg
Mine =>
And of course, hers looks like “Buren columns” and mine like “la Pieta”… hehehe :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

At last, say to Sirius that “yes” we are under Nouveau, and this is confirmed in OMCC- Material-video card -at the bottom of the window- (not mentioning all the little problems this driver uses to create…).

I will not install Nvidia proprietary driver until “XFdrake” tries to install “304-version-driver” which is obsolete with most of the modern cards… This behaviour has to be changed asap…

Bye

It is an old screenshot, coming from this topic but the point is the same

Well. I’m intrigued now…

I can’t say what was updated and what wasn’t except for the today update (only the lxqt-l10n package, updated vía MCC; no notification at task bar).

For some unknown reason, but probably due to some update:
1- Login page visual aspect changed.
2- No more black screens !! Up to now, 1 hour and 15 minutes without black screens !
3- I even didn’t enter the test repo @rugyada said ! Still using kernel 4.9.0 !!
4- Still some glitches. Less than before, but can be annoying when fill a dialog.
