I just have a little question.
OM is testing SonicDE, right?
What’s gonna be when/if SonicDE go to the mainstream OM?
SonicDE will be the official X11 version and Plasma the official Wayland version?
And those who’s running Plasma X11 now on ROME? will be automatically updated to SonicDE?
I’m just really curious.
This is my first time hearing of SonicDE and I will have to investigate.
I am running ROME with Plasma/X11, but if I heard correctly, OM is running XLibre instead of X11. I have been away too long and much has happened.
We dropped Xorg’s x11 in favor of XLibre’s x11, there is nothing the user needs to do and you probably won’t even notice a difference.
SonicDE is an X11-only fork of Plasma6, it started when KDE announced that they would stop developing their x11 session to focus on wayland. KDE still offers x11, but no new features will be added. SonicDE is still in the process of splitting everything off from the KDE/Plasma naming schemes, and it seems like they have hit a big hurdle with the sheer number of intertwined packages. It will be quite some time before it is ready to be the default x11 session. I don’t think the OM devs will even be able to begin planning for a change like that until they see that SonicDE is completely independent and ready for mainstream usage.
So… Probably only the end of the year?
And while using the X session on KDE, when Sonic is ready, maybe an update who changes the KDE for Sonic completely?
I had SonicDE working fine with XLibre on another distro a few months ago (CachyOS) so it is definitely possible. But so far I haven’t been able to get it working on OM because of all the package conflicts. Hopefully it all gets straightened out soon.
One thing I did notice back then was that Sonic was a bit behind on touchscreen interface support, for those for whom that matters.
The last time I used SonicDE here it was fine. There are a lot of package conflicts so it can’t coexist with Plasma, but if you let it remove plasma stuff then it works. I have noticed that wayland handles touchscreens better than x11 on both of my touchscreen laptops.
I have been running OM Plasma again for the first time in a year. I started with XLibre and I am running Wayland right now. On this desktop I have to look to see which session is running. They both work fine for me. A year ago, I had to run X11.
On my laptop, it might be a different story. I have not gotten around to changing it over yet and I may not, since all it does is display the weather.
For me, it looks like I can just stick with KDE and Wayland, but if I was still forced to use X11, I would be looking hard for SonicDE and XLibre. The only touchscreen I have is my phone. I am hoping that we have SonicDE ready by the time the need comes around.
I’m waiting for Xlibre in the Rock version.
