Some folks are concerned about KDE and wokeness. I'm not that worried lets talk

What’s so “unholy” about that? Something like 80% of my :penguin: converts have been in the political sphere - consultants, various groups, etc.

Words are not violence. Even from people we DEEPLY disagree with. I think some of what people are saying is making KDE seem a lot worse (the non-profit not the global community) than it really is. I think KDE makes good software that what anyone should want. There are other organizations that have abandoned focus on the software product over activism and that is FAR worse and much valid to be against it.

can you elaborate your point?

hypr[land] and awesome are available. I hear others are running i3. It’s probably best to just experiment.

The foundations raise the money, and the projects dance for it according to the wishes of the foundation. There is no situation in software or otherwise where that is not the case.

My solution is to use the best software for each purpose and actively donating to them if they only distinguish between good and bad code and not good and bad people. OpenMandriva accepts contributions from everyone and doesn’t care what your political affiliations are. It’s the same with EndeavourOS. As such, I try to contribute to both projects. Gnome, Mozilla and Elementary will never get any kind of financial assistance from me as a result of their decision to align with the Devil.

The problem is that some ideas are society wrecking when they are allowed to fester and grow.

Gender confusion tranny stuff is a good example that most people can see is crazy. I would also add anti-Whiteness, anti-Christianity, gender conflict (feminism vs manosphere), anti-family, sexual degeneracy, pro-pedo stuff. These ideas are only pushed by people who wish us harm. It is not a genuine good-faith disagreement.

All of these things actually degrade society in a real way. Is this violence? Maybe not directly, but I can easily deal with violence that comes to me and do it in a very permanent way. How do I deal with the insidious things these projects are using their money to support?

Brutal, relentless meritocracy is probably the best way to deal with anything technical. However, meritocracy has a long history of proving the differences between various groups and a lot of people do not want to face the implications of that.

Definitely a tough spot we find ourselves in. No wonder most people choose to ignore it. The solutions are going to be mean and nasty.

Incorrect. The spread of these malicious ideologies happened because force (particularly state force) was used to promulgate them. Remove that, and this BS will wither on the vine. Try to fight it with different CoCs, or other coercive legislation will simply open the door for the next batch of assholes to start throwing their weight around.

Well, we are currently ruled by corporations and foreign entities, not our government so I disagree. Although your position is not irrational. I am also only speaking from the point of view of the United States. Our government is a collection of mercenary shills with no real power among those we actually elect. They are just mouthpieces who kiss the wall.

Whatever the solution ends up being, don’t kid yourself, it is going to be nasty. Those currently in charge are not just going to give up and go home without a fight. We can have a utopian preference if we want to, but in the end reality is going to win the day.

Even if this is true, it is never going to be “removed”, unless someone more powerful removes it and takes it for himself. For better or worse, we are going to have governments and/or powerful people in charge. I prefer to operate within the realm of possibility.

I am trying to be nicer about my answers because I went too hard before and hurt some feelings.

Also, props for being able to think outside of the libertarian consensus here. Even admitting there is a public good that could or should be addressed is a major break from your fellows and shows a bit of independent thought there. I am glad to see I was wrong about you.

OK. This is what I get for chiming in on a political thread [sigh]

For reference, depending upon the election cycle (or where it is during the year), anywhere from 40 % - 80% of my professional time is spent in politics. Guess which side… Also I obviously am located in the US so everything is referenced to the US political world.

There is a phrase: “Why do we give money to countries that hate us? Keep the money and let them hate us for free”

Well, when you use an OS like Windows / macOS or software like MS Office / Google Suite you are paying for that license (directly in cash or in their spyware. Here in the FOSS world, it’s actually the opposite.

The software is “free” - usually because a corp/foundation is paying for the development. In the case of a pure community project, the volunteers are “paying” with their time and efforts. Canonical vs OpenMandriva. And you even have those same Microsofts/IBMs/Googles/Apples, etc. donating to and running many of those same projects.

Any user, anywhere can grab the software and use it.

So, in effect, all of the FOSS projects are paying the users to use their software. Either in their direct cash support or in the passion/energy/efforts of the contributors.

It is no secret how the US Political Left in the US feels about the US Political Right. If in doubt, go to twitter or bluesky and read the comments; especially if the original post was made by a conservative. Or just look at some of the Lunduke videos.

So when I was talking about my “converts” to Linux (almost all using Mint & Debuntu on the servers I set up) they’re very happy. They can still do what they want. Minimal transition aggravation. They don’t have to buy new systems, they stop paying MS or Google for the cloud services, etc. All the penguini-goodness.

The fact that the people involved in those FOSS projects HATE them and everything they believe in / stand for and routinely attack them anyway they can AND THEN can’t prevent them from using their software, their systems from dismantling that they are doing is a delicious turn of events. When Trump started Truth Social it was based on Mastodon. The Fediverse folks went ballistic. For those of us involved in politics it was fun to watch.

They are now paying those of us on the political Right in the US, not the other way around.

I was about to start contributing to Mint. Both in effort and cash. And then Clem went on a political rant about how he didn’t want “people like me” using Mint. Or even donating. OK. So I wont.

But I will still use HIS efforts, and those with him and those upstream from him, to go against their political efforts. And for every political victory this just adds a few more sprinkles on the cupcake.

I’m going to close this with a warning to everyone here. If you get involved in politics you will never leave. It’s a black hole and will consume everything.

Further, Politics, mixed with anything, destroys it. Politics mixed with religion, science, or even computers eventually corrupts it. And then swallows it whole, where every action is guided by politics.

So please be careful here in OM space. OM was NOT founded as a political organization. Don’t let it turn into one. You’ll regret it. You’ll lose everything that makes OM special.

Hopefully you guys will never have to test your hypothesis, because it’s not gonna hold up to any actual conflict.

I have been in conflict with these people before. They were the aggressors every time. I have been literally punched in the face by both Antifa and BLM. They threw piss bottles and bricks at us. They went to every vendor the organization used for anything and threatened them into stopping business with us. We had to host our website in Switzerland. We had to raise funds for awhile by members sending in checks by mail because they got our payment processor to break their contract with us. I have had a personal bank account closed without notice. We have even had to sue a couple of rogue FBI agents who would not leave us alone despite no laws being broken. I had to go over their heads to get them to back off.

Lunduke just mentioned them going after Framework Computers now. Hopefully they have money to fight the battle.

These people do not play around when they decide to come after an organization. They play for keeps.

Do not make the mistake of thinking you are special.

With all respect, not intended as fighting words.

Back in the old days the communists declared, “the personal is political, and the political is personal.” And modern leftists of all stripes seem to live by that adage.

This actually makes logical sense for them. The biggest threat to their ideology is intact nuclear families.

yup

Without going into a full-on political rant or turning this forum into a telenovela I will concur with @harkonnen007 's post - at least in spirit.

Because I personally know groups here in AZ that have had similar experiences.
