Severe problems after installing updates through discover

The same arguments happen at the openSUSE forums and the Arch forums, but the Arch crowd will just kick you out and tell you to RTFM!

I stand beside @ben79 on this. I still would not recommend updating with Discover until further testing is done.

I think I’m actually agreeing with you, just in different words. If it’s the obvious default, average users expect it to work. When it then breaks, at best we’re confused.

Thank you both for taking the time to clarify. It must be extremely frustrating trying to make all this hang together. But that people are still working on it, that is promising!

Go complain at KDE. Make your voice heard. You won’t be the first, nor the last. System Update through Discover should not be an option. Installing software from the KDE Store is fine. Flatpaks are fine. System packages, NO! System Updates, NO!

If it were up to me, Discover would not be found in our repos, but that is not my call. :grinning:

I have actually asked the KDE folks how the heck do I disable system updates through Discover (having found on Fedora – it doesn’t break anything, but it never finishes the update, and meanwhile check for updates causes a long delay before I can use the rest of Discover) – at least give us an option there, I’d be happy. Alas, so far no response. I may go whine about it again, on General Principles.

I know people tend not to read the Release Notes. However that is not an excuse, that is arrogance and laziness. If I am going to try say Manjaro or Kaos I am going to read their Release Notes because I know I do not know how they do things.

Also at the top of the Forum page there is a link to this:

That is not difficult to follow.

OM is not < put your distro here >

Other than tell it to users every other day, I suspect I should really put this sentence all caps on the wallpaper too.

What may sound “obvious” to someone is not for someone else.
I could provide tons of examples working in a distro and not in another, but it would be time wasted.

I knew that was coming.

This is a human nature or human behavior problem. This thread could be titled “People don’t read the instructions”. I suspect we all, including me, are guilty of this from time to time.

I don’t use debian or fedora distros. Coming from years of Arch and OpenSUSE I have learned to just pretend that Discover doesn’t exist. Use the terminal and pay attention to updates.

I too, come from years of Arch and openSUSE and I feel the same way.

This is not an OpenMandriva issue. This is a Discover issue with ANY rolling release.
