ROME(rolling) nVidia proprietary users

Hello,

  • OpenMandriva Lx version:

ROME(rolling)

  • Desktop environment (KDE, LXQT…):

ALL

  • Description of the issue (screenshots if relevant):

New Software 2024-12-25

  • Relevant informations (hardware involved, software version, logs or output…):

With today’s ROME upgrade there are new kernel versions kernel 6.12.6 and kernel-rc 6.13.0-0.rc4 and to go with those kernel versions there is nvidia-565.77-2.

We would appreciate reports on if this new software does/does not work. It seems to be unknown for instance if the OMLx nvidia driver works with Wayland. The few people in OM-contributor group with nVidia hardwqre have reported the new packages do work but they all seem to use X11.

When I do have free time to unninstall .run driver, Ill check this with Wayland. I am primarly using Wayland, X11 isnt installed on my system.

Ok, I installed nvidia driver from OM Welcome and it boots to SDDM but when I log in to Wayland it shows black screen with only cursor and than screen after 10sec gos blinking.

Screen

EDIT: Here is bug reports, I runned then from X11 coz Wayland cant start.

om-bug-report-20241226120646.log.txt (566,3 KB)
nvidia-bug-report.tar.xz (576,0 KB)

I am going to back to .run file. Because OM nvidia drivers wont work.

Is that a custom sddm theme?
Same bug with default one?

If I recall from your previous post, you are using a hybrid setup (intel + nVidia). Are you using a HDMI cable to plug a laptop into a monitor? If so, does it login correctly with the internal screen?

Edit: Please also be aware, Wayland is not guaranteed to be free of bugs on any distribution. Therefore, I would suggest using X11 especially if you are using the proprietary driver and will be playing games, especially on Steam.

We appreciate very much @Draguljche reporting on this, it is a big help. To clear something up according to all reports we have the nvidia driver does work with X11. We have one user @Draguljche reporting that it does not work with Wayland. We need other nvidia users to confirm or not that this works under Wayland. We could use more support from nvidia users with testing and reporting. Try to remember that all OM developers and contributors are unpaid, part time, volunteers. We rely heavily on users for testing and reporting to make things better. That is the community part of being a community distribution of Linux which is what OMLx is.

Part of why this is so important regarding nvidia driver is that there are only 2 or 3 computers in the contributor group that has nVidia hardware. That is not even close to enough hardware for adequate testing so the testing has to be done by users.

It is same. When login to wayland than that happens.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (16) @ 3.70 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 [Discrete]

Does wayland work with nouveau or do you get the same issue?

Have you tried this?

Based on our packaging recipe, we should be adding the necessary config to set the nVidia card to primary in a hybrid scenario.

I am also linking this here since it appears to be the same behavior and is affecting upstream:

The original poster here @Hossville is the person with multiple gpu’s.

I believe @Draguljche has only:

At least that is what I see reported.

Understood. I think the [Discrete] portion may still indicate more than one installed GPU. The overall goal was to get some kind of response so we can help troubleshoot. The referenced screen recording also showed the monitor/TV trying to set a specific resolution:

I tested my GTX 960 (which isn’t that far off from the GTX 1080) in cooker with wayland and could not reproduce the behavior. It was extremely slow when showing the login splash, opening menus, and pretty much doing anything. My card is using an HDMI connection on a TV with an odd resolution (1366x768). In that situation it could be kernel or driver related, or something with the software in ROME that is creating the issue given the report on the KDE forum I linked earlier. In the meantime, I would still recommend using only X11.

If you are any Wayland user wants to install X11 for testing it is just a couple of packages on Plasma6 system. The command is:

sudo dnf in task-plasma6-x11

Conversly if any X11 user wants to install Wayland:

sudo dnf in task-plasma6-wayland

You can switch between the 2 at the sddm login screen in the lower left corner or you can change the settings in SystemSettings>Colors and Themes>Login Screen (SDDM)>Behavior.

IMO: OpenMandriva Wayland does seem to have more bugs than Wayland implementation on some other Linux distros. The more testers we can get fot these issues the more likely we can get things fixed soonish.

Also the reason OM keeps X11 as default is that we know we have a lot of users with older hardware where Wayland simply does not work or does not work well enough to be usabe. We do not want users to have to throw away hardware that still is usable. That is not nice to planet earth. Plus some people can not afford this.

Yes.

I have only one GPU which I mentioned. I used Wayland znver ISO to install OM, yesterday I installed X11 to reproduce bug reports because I cant login to wayland. Now I again installed Nvidia driver through .run file. To use wayland.

You didn’t really specify this, but I am going to assume you downloaded the wayland or the full ISO to install ROME and were able to log in with the nouveau driver in reference to the following troubleshooting question:

Based on your replies, I can’t tell if you want something that just works (which the run file or using X11 as suggested would do) or you would like to help us diagnose the issue. The only suspicious things I found in your bug report pertaining to wayland is this:

pro 26 12:06:31 drkonqi-coredump-launcher[3405]: Unable to find file for pid 1491 expected at "kcrash-metadata/kwin_wayland.7695db365539435f9fc677c2deabc26c.1491.ini"

There is more information required about your hardware because it cannot be replicated on a similar graphics card:

Thats what was problem since Mart this year. I already tried that. I dont know what more Info to provide, except that My setup works like charm on Mageia and Rosa Fresh Desktop 13 since both are Mandriva forks like OM.

You already tried what? There were a lot of questions asked.

What type of monitor and connection? Have you tried other connections? Do you have a more targeted log of the wayland failure? I found this command:

journalctl -b -1 | grep -i "drm\|nvidia\|NVRM\|09:00.0\|wayland"

From a post here (6 days ago):

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=436472

It provides a log of your previous boot so you can possibly find where the error took place. As good as a lot of our devs are, sometimes we can’t just divine what the issue could be with random PC’s all over the world.

In my many years of using and supporting computers as well as open source software, I hear this rationalization a lot. If you find a distribution that works with every component that you want to use, and the system is mission critical, then use the distribution that works. Sadly, we can try to cover the majority of use cases, but as I already said here I have a GTX 960 and the card may as well have the same issue as yours because it doesn’t perform very well. This is mostly because the proprietary nVidia driver is provided as a convenience. If you can get the .run file to work that is probably preferred. We may not update the version of the driver for a while and a dkms build from the run file will just rebuild when you update the kernel.

So to summarize.
I checked this already since that was mentioned on Mart this year.
