Real Time Conversion Patch & OM Lx KernelI: this a good idea?

Hello,

Requirements:

Does the the PREEMPT_RT patch play nicely w/the current kernel? Is applying this patch difficult? time consuming? a danger to ALL MANKIND?
I’m doing music production w/Ardour on OM & it feels like I’m experiencing noticable latency issues. Hardware platform is a 4-core i-3 intel w/16 GB of RAM.
many thanks

OpenMandriva Lx version:

OpenMandriva Lx release 6.0 (Vanadium) Rock for x86_64

Desktop environment (KDE, LXQT…):

KDE Plasma Version: 6.3.4

Moving to Coffee break since not a support issue.

Depending on what you are doing, I would say this processor is more than likely the reason you are having latency issues.

true
but since the hardware solution costs money that I don’t have & patching the kernel might cost me time I do have, seems to me worth investigating at the least – also I’ve seen latency more often in recording sessions, but what I’m currently experiencing is happening in a mix session that has no plugins & only a few tracks & as I have worked on this hardware before in such circumstances w/o these issues, again, it seemed worth some research.
thanks for the reply

I recall having used Ubuntu Studio with a RT kernel in the past. The downside was you had to build a separate kernel because the RT kernel didn’t play nice with some applications. While this was many years back, I can still see how it may be a factor when some applications are not written to ignore it or take advantage of it.

Just checked & Ardour appears to be setup to take advantage of an RTOS: (from DDG’s AI assist) "

Yes, Ardour can benefit from a real-time operating system, as it enhances performance by reducing latency and improving audio processing capabilities. This is particularly useful for professional audio production and recording tasks."
