Problems with some games on steam

Requirements:

have steam and the installed games (i suppose)

I have Searched the forum for my issue and found nothing related or helpful
I have checked the Resources category (Resources Index)
I have reviewed the Wiki for relevant information
I have read the the Release Notes and Errata

Description of the issue (screenshots if relevant):

so, seems like i am facing some problems in some games (they are starting to be quite a few now) on steam
for example i tried playing Deponia Doomsday (which is a native game) but it has no audio at all
the first Runaway does start (with newest protons) but has no video and no sound at all
Broken Sword 2, has no sound at all in the original scummvm version

Relevant informations (hardware involved, software version, logs or output…):

Amd Ryzen 7 - Amd Radeon 6600 - 16 gb ram

i supposed maybe some codecs were missing, cause the same games have no problems at all on another distro, so i tried installing all of them, but that didn’t solve my issue

now, considering it seems not to be a proton issue cause it happens either on native and windows games, and the same games does start on another distro, maybe someone can help me track down the issue?

Unfortunately, you will have to check protondb or Valve’s GH for the Issue specific to those games. We don’t use native mode, which means the libraries for the games are delivered in SLR.

thank you for your answer, can i ask you what’s native mode?also, do you think using the flatpak may solve the issue?

i already checked on protondb but unfortunately nobody is having those problems, in fact games are marked as native/platinum for deponia and broken sword and gold for runaway

can i install the flatpak version of steam alongside the rpm version, to see if it changes something?

Native mode is a testing/unsupported feature that allows people interested in testing game support to use the system libraries instead of the older ubuntu derived libraries. I don’t recommend using it for just playing a game.

No. I believe you would have a problem with shortcuts, and you would also need to recreate your Steam library.

so, i’ve been able to try the flatpak version of steam, and to my surprise Broken Sword 2 works flawlessy (which is native)

now i am downloading the other two games, to try, but at this point i kinda have the impression that there is something weird on the native steam rpm then…

i’ll keep the post updated, in case someone hits the same problem…

finally made it to try the other games

(un)fortunately they all works flawlessly with the flatpak version so i do assume there is something wrong in how the steam rpm is build/packaged?

i’m no expert but i can only assume so considering the flatpak and steam in rpm from another distro both works perfectly

Everything in non-free and flatpak are provided for convenience. You would have to work with the upstream on Steam just like you would with nvidia because the Steam client is not open source.

unfortunately, yesterday the controller stopped working with the flatpak version, and there was no way to get it back

so i had to return to the rpm version steam

at this point i suppose i should ask valve and/or the developers of the games…

You should probably start in the Community for each game on Steam. They may have pinned something already.

Can you try running steam from console and then running games.

Console output should show somethings. Maybe missing dependencies. It would help.

let me try to start steam from console, to see if i can gather some more informations

this is from when starting pang adventures, the game launches to a black screen, with music playing, and then asks directly if i want to force quit the app

the game is marked as platinum on protondb and it’s one of those “out of the box” with none having problems. Also i already finished it on another distro with no problem

this is deponia doomsday, which does start indeed, but has problems with the intro video and has no sound at all (this is also linux native)

i already tried with another distro and has no problem at all

this is broken sword 2, which is native, it has two games, the remastered edition which plays just fine (it’s a native game) and the original one, which is played throught scummvm. This version has no sound at all, but it works perfectly on another distro
