[…] OpenMandriva se sirve en dos sabores: estable y rolling-release, o Lx y ROME, respectivamente. Del primero queda el lanzamiento hace algo más de un año de OpenMandriva Lx 5.0, última versión hasta la fecha. Del segundo, el que nos ocupa, tuvimos una actualización más reciente, cuando en verano apareció OpenMandriva ROME 24.07, con el aliciente de dar el salto a KDE Plasma 6.
¿Y qué aliciente tiene OpenMandriva ROME 24.12, como para volver a cubrir su lanzamiento? La introducción de un nuevo spin en su oferta: COSMIC, el escritorio desarrollado por System76 para Pop!_OS, aunque como se ve, comienza a extenderse ya por otros sistemas. Eso sí, solo para pruebas, pues continúa en fase alfa, tal y como lo llegó el pasado agosto a la propia Pop!_OS.
Sea como fuere, no deja de ser curioso que OpenMandriva se haya atrevido a adoptar el escritorio pese a estar en una fase de desarrollo tan temprana. Pero ya se puede probar, además de con Pop!_OS, con OpenMandriva ROME… Y con Fedora, Arch Linux, openSUSE… La vida se abre camino, que decía | Ian Malcolm. Para más datos, el sitio oficial de COSMIC.
Con todo, cabe señalar que el entorno de escritorio predeterminado de OpenMandriva Lx y ROME es KDE Plasma, incluido en la nueva imagen en su última versión estable (6.2.4 y KDE Applications 24.08.3), por defecto sobre X11 (advierten de problemas con Wayland en VirtualBox, pero más allá de eso no se entiende bien que una vez instalado el sistema no se use el nuevo protocolo gráfico).
Además de Plasma y COSMIC, OpenMandriva ROME ofrece spins con GNOME y LXQt, como buena rolling-release, todo en su versión estable más reciente. […]

Questa versione segna un importante passo avanti per la distribuzione “rolling release“, a quasi 5 mesi dalla versione precedente OpenMandriva Rome 24.07.
La nuova versione arriva con il kernel Linux 6.12 LTS e include una serie di aggiornamenti e nuove funzionalità. If you’re looking for a sensible operating system that takes a practical approach to the desktop, OpenMandriva is worth a look.
It’s rare to find a Linux distribution that’s not based on Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, or Arch. That’s not to say they don’t exist, but they are hard to find.
One such distribution is OpenMandriva (officially, OpenMandriva Lx), which is a community version of the once-heralded Mandriva (which was based on the long-since-dead Mandrake Linux). Mandrake was a very special take on Linux because it had one very important goal: make Linux easy to use for all.
I’d go so far as to say that OpenMandriva’s OM Welcome tool is the best of the best because it does an outstanding job of holding a new user’s hand to introduce them to what’s what, while also giving advanced users easy access to configurations hardware options, and more.
One of my favorite aspects of OpenMandriva is that it’s fully independent. Because it’s not based on any other Linux distribution, it has complete autonomy to do what it wants, which is to remain as pragmatic as possible. On top of that, OpenMandriva was the first Linux distribution to ever be built with Clang (a compiler front end for the “C” programming languages C, C++, Objective-C, and Objective-C++).
Clang is a modular, open-source replacement for GCC, but this doesn’t really matter to new users. What is important is that OpenMandriva isn’t dependent on any other Linux distribution, so it’s free to be exactly what it wants to be… and it does that very well.
Anyone coming off of the headache that is the end of Windows 10 would be remiss if they didn’t give OpenMandriva a try. It’s beautiful, flexible, and as easy to use as whatever OS is currently on your computer.
