But on the bright side. I did not loose any fps while gaming on the The Hunter Call of the Wild with the opensource driver
Then I have no idea why im getting random freezes. I end up having to tty into a terminal and them ctrl-alt-f1 back into the system. Sometimes it works, sometimes it just gives me a blinking cursor.
Do you have a laptop or a desktop? If a desktop, you should probably pick a GPU or you could be getting false positives. Itās possible you have an AMD APU, but then I donāt know why the manufacturer would put in a nvidia cardā¦
It is a laptop it is a LOQ 15.6. It has an amd ryzen 7 and a Nvidia 4050m. So it has discrete graphics and has graphics with the internal cpu.
I would suggest switching off the hybrid mode (probably in bios) to test nvidia then.
I did no benchmarking before installing this, but it has been flawless so far. Going by seat of the pants feel, I canāt tell any difference. Now, I wish I had run a pass of Heaven or Valley before installing it.
I uninstalled the module and benchmarked it with Superposition default settings.
I installed the module and ran the test again. I didnāt allow it long to cool down, but that doesnāt seem to matter. It is a little bit slower, but it is not enough to feel in use.
I would say those differences are negligible.
I would really like to see some others jump in here and test this module. It is not causing me any crashes or glitches. It seems to be flawless. Of course your mileage may vary, but it is a one line install and a one line remove.
If I had a newer cardā¦
The driver is fine, works great, my laptop just has problems with OpenMandriva in general. I have tried to disable the igpu and then use it with it enabled and the APU disabled. It seems to not like a AMD/Nvidia configuration. I wish there was a way for me to just use the Nvidia GPU. I changed it in my bios but OpenMandriva is still trying to use my amd apu.
Iām at a loss at this point. Might be time to sell my laptop and buy an all AMD laptopā¦my fiance said i am not allowedā¦so Iāll take that as Iām 43 and so what I want. Lol
I installed it yesterday on rome for my 3090 and tried to install some games to see if theyd run.
My steam games run fine but lutris does not, at least for the game i tried. I dont know enough about wine to configure it well.
I did have some trouble with the wayland session, its extremely laggy when a program loads. May as well be unusable.
Switch to x11. Wayland and Nvidia do not play well on Open Mandriva.
So here is my review. There is not any significant difference in the proprietary and the open driver. I will stick with the Open driver as it makes me feel warm and squishy not using Nvidiaās driver. I generally play The Hunter Call of the Wild and am getting the same FPS in both. I think I have fixed my logging in and logging out issue by turning off desktop compositor. There seems to be a bug where it is trying to load AMD and NVIDIA gpus at the same time and it causes a blinking cursor and eventually logs in with compositing off. Then tries to restart the compositor again. This is a problem that I have experienced with other KDE distros not just OMLX. I am just keeping my fingers crossed that I have figured it out. But the open driver plus x11 is golden on my system now!
Thank you to all.
The Hunter Call of the Wild - I was getting 70-85 FPS on proprietary NVIDIA
On the Open Nvidia Driver I was getting from 78-85. Depending on graphical rendering and such.
I think we are still using the Nvidia proprietary driver along with the kernel module. I believe that by the time this module is completed and merged into the kernel, the Nouveau driver will be ready to take advantage of it.
I could be absolutely wrong about that.
I couldnāt get my 2070 Super to work with Wayland at all.
either way it actually increased my fps a tiny bit and I have not been kicked out of the system yet. I am running scripts testing my theory on the compositor problem.
Mine is rock solid and I have no complaints at all with it. I really expected to have issues and bugs.
The majority of the issues I am seeing with nvidia cards have been those that run multi head configurations (known issues with nouveau
driver and some configurations with wayland
), or GTX cards (on the closed nvidia driver with wayland or the noveau
driver on either).
