Nvidia on Rock

I might do something a little sketchy. Since I really want to use and help with OMlx, I might try to install the latest nvidia drivers from their website to see if that works on Rock. The only foreseeable problem it is newer than the one in the rock repository and I do not know if it works with Kernel 6.6. Just wanting to see if anyone has done this?

Its either this or I can only run in a VM, but would rather have OMlx as my main driver. I have the issue with the rome release of logging me out to the login screen then screen goes black and gives a cursor. So I had to use another distro for a daily driver.

Any help would be appreciated.

Wait for a dev before you do this. :grinning:

Installing from the .run file should work and makes a dkms kmod. This is recommended for their Legacy drivers because we don’t package them anymore. Rock is probably not getting another kernel update until OMLx 6.0, and it will get the version of the driver that is in Cooker and ROME at that time.

Thank You. I appreciate it. I mainly use my os for gaming and devotion/sermon prep. I need the updated graphics unfortunely, but OMlx rome is unusable.

Are you using the plasma or plasma-x11 ISO for ROME? We strongly suggest using the x11 flavor. The issue are seeing may be related to wayland on nouveau on an unsupported (fully) card because it times out trying to load. If x11 works better, you could probably bypass the .run file altogether and just use what is in the repos.

It did it with both unfortunately. I tried each and I think it is a plasma6/sddm and Nvidia issue.

I even tried to circumvent it but trying to enable lightdm instead of sddm and running i3, but I could not figure it out and had to do church prep for Sunday. This was Saturday through the evening.

fI would highly suggest sticking with x11 if you are stuck on/chose to use nouvou. While wayland can possibly work you will have unrecoverable bugs that require sshing into the device and rebooting the display server or just a full reboot of the device.

I definitely do not use wayland. I try not to on any device as I have an Nvidia card and wayland is not there yet. I may get 1-2 fps boost with using wayland but the headache of constantly having to tty into a terminal annoys me

i3 is named: i3-wm
in the repo /extra

sudo systemctl disable sddm
sudo systemctl enable lightdm

I actually had discrete nvidia gfx card to run in bios. I switched to hybrid. I am going to try and switch over to rome again. I will keep everyone posted once nvidia is installed. Wish me luck…i will get this to work. lol

So it is definitely plasma6. It kicks me out and logs back into plasma 5. Anyway to make plasma 5 default instead of using plasma 6?

Fresh install of plasma5 iso

-ROME plasma5 Slim x86_64 here
-ROME plasma5 Full x86_64 building right now

Thank You. I saw that right before you posted…A little tired atm. lol

So I did not have to install a new system. I actually just installed budgie, i3 and am using lightdm. My system is now fast and stable. I am so glad that I get to use OMlx
