Desktop environment (KDE, LXQT…):
KDE Plasma 6.3.4, but it doesn’t matter, as I am switching it to Cinnamon
Description of the issue (screenshots if relevant):
The NVIDIA Legacy driver requires the 6.7.1-1 kernel, specifically the DKMS package. I am trying to find this kernel, but after hunting for it on Internet Archive, the official mirrors, and RPMFind, the results came up drier than the sun during a solar flare. I am also aware this kernel is EOL, but I need this done soon, as my sister will be using this laptop for college.
Relevant information (hardware involved, software version, logs or output…):
MacBook Pro 9,1 (15 Inch, Mid 2012, Non Retina)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M Mac Edition
Intel Core i7-3615QM
16GB TIMETEC RAM
1440x900 Screen
Legacy drivers will not work with newer kernels at all.
You also did not really do this. If I search for “nvidia legacy” this is the result underneath your topic in the results, and this reply still holds true:
Drivers older than 5xx will not work with Linux kernel 6.x and newer because nvidia has deprecated them.
But the thing is, though, I tried to install it on kernel version 5.15, and it still did not work. It needs the specific kernel mentioned in the OP. What you quoted was of no help, either, since it requires a specific kernel that is not anywhere I can find.
There is no legacy driver that will work with this kernel.
We don’t support kernel 5 anymore. You will have to use nouveau. I would recommend using it with X11. It doesn’t play well with Wayland (which we don’t recommend for production level use).
I know it’s a bummer. I had two 1GB Fermi cards I really wanted to keep using and they closed off access to the open driver for everything older than the 1650. It was made worse when they decided to not support 4xx and older with kernel 6. I hope nouveau works for you. Good luck.
