My take on the slim edition of OMV (gnome edition)

Hello, i finally got the chance to download the slim edition of openmandriva in his gnome spin, and i wanted to write here some concerns i have with it

let me specify anyway that concerns are different from problems, and i will list them later

i mainly have one concern and that is the fact that most gtk3 apps are preferred to gtk4, we should go modern not backwards, and i think some apps could be removed (i’m looking at you power manager), or for example, gedit and gucharmap could (or should?) be replaced by gnome-characters and gnome-text-editor

there are also two main problems with the iso

1 i know you wanted to keep the iso as slim as possible but some other languages other than english should be added, i for example would not use that for that alone, despite knowing english, but i think at least top european languages should be included
2 the app for configuring the printer is missing, yeah i know, cups, and i know i can install the relative app from repos, but still, in my opinion an app for configuring printers should be part of a base install or users might get lost

but

credit where it’s due and with problem 1 and 2 addressed, this would be to me an instant choice over the big iso, because that would mean less time on slower connections to download the iso and much less time to remove not needed things that can be easily installed in omv repos

Since you aren’t requesting support, I have put this in a better topic area (Packages and features requests).

My suggestion would be to have a section in om-welcome that allows the install of additional languages and whatever the similar utility is for GNOME. Plasma seems to handle that in System Settings → Region & Language, but I have no idea if the backend handles the install of other languages as I only speak English.

my bad for the wrong section

anyway, gnome handles languages in the same section of settings, but the slim iso only lists english languages and it’s variants (like american english, british english and so on), so i suppose they have just been stripped out from the iso per se…

How to make the ‘slim’ ISO localized in your own language

Second, if we start to add packages to the slim iso it would fail its purpose to exist.
Also, what should be included may vary from person to person.
Every choice necessarily does imply a sacrifice.

Looked around for translation of the well known Italian idiom
“Non si può avere la botte piena e la moglie ubriaca”

and found:
“You can’t have your cake and eat it too”

which probably is well fitting :stuck_out_tongue:

While i “can” agree on languages i feel like the app for configuring the printer should be part of a basic install

i mean if i can’t have the cake let me at least print it xD

With gnome I believe we use tears-of-mandrake, Unless om-welcome works with gnome.
