Mullvad VPN via Wireguard

Hello,

Requirements:

[Yes] I have Searched the forum for my issue and found nothing related or helpful
[Yes] I have checked the Resources category (Resources Index)
[Yes] I have reviewed the Wiki for relevant information
[Yes] I have read the the Release Notes and Errata

OpenMandriva Lx version:

Desktop environment (KDE, LXQT…): Fluent round dark?/KDE plasma?

Description of the issue (screenshots if relevant): My system doesnt know where wireguard is saved

Relevant informations (hardware involved, software version, logs or output…):
Console log.txt (834 bajtů)

  • Tried to make it work via downloads for Fedora/Debian from Mullvad site and using Wine with WIndows version. Nothing worked.

  • Found forum thread about Mullvad VPN and followed them and got stuck. (System not knowing where Wireguard is)

I did think of trying to look into /root but as a promp showed up, about potential bricking of system i decided not to do that.
Simillar for something called “superuser” (which i dont even know how to activate)

So instead of risking it i decided to ask for help.
Hopefully with all relevant information already provided while following guides to posting. (Except checkmarks for the first four “info checks”)
If not, please do tell me how/what to make better for next time

Are you using the flatpak? We don’t package Mullvad, and don’t suggest using other rpms to install things. Try the flatpak and see if it works.

I tried finding it with “Discover” + DnfDrake, Yum Extender and the last one (+ from console itself, nothing showed up). Not a single one had Mullvad VPN, hence why i tried downloading them from Mullvad site.

Not sure if thats what you mean tho, since thats all i know about finding apps in OM

If you give a link their github/gitlab/whatever then we might be able to package it.

Thank you for posting it, instead of me. Didnt notice there was new comment here until now

I’m not 100% sure, but I get the impression that if a given software app isn’t in OMLs repos, then OML doesn’t really support it, even if its available as a flatpak. its a sort of “use at your own risk” sorta thing.
What I have done is only use DnfDrak and FlatDrake for SW installs, if its not in one of those repos, then I find an alternative. I steer well clear of Discover. In your case, I’d recommend Proton VPN, as its available as a flatpak, but that’s just me. You can always uninstall it using FlatDrake when and if the good people at OML package the Mullvad VPN.

The Mullvad VPN isn’t in the flathub repo, only their browser is on flathub.

If something is not in our repos that means we don’t support it YET. Feel free to request something and we will make an effort to package it. No promise on a timeline though.

Yes, i know Mullvad VPN isnt working nor is it available, hence why i sought out alternative use of it, which should be possible directly via wireguard, but when i try to move downloaded config file for wireguard, console responds that it cant find wireguard folder.

I just need the utility of the VPN since i have it prepaid for 3 more months. And hence i am satisfied if i can make it work directly with Wireguard.
And that should be possible

And according to this it should work

Did you use DnfDrake to install wireguard-tools.x86_64?

No, i copied the console line from the forum post (at the end) to install it.

Ahh, good then.

it looks like you have to use a Mullvad util. to generate the config file, and download it, and then move it to the /etc/wireguard folder.
If that folder doesn’t exist someone here should be able to tell you where it is.

Yes… problem being that when i try to move it with console it doesnt know where WIreguard folder is

Can confirm, the /etc/wireguard folder does not exist after installing wireguard.
I would try creating the folder, moving the config file into it, changing permissions to root only on the folder, and then proceeding, but that’s just me, I’m no guru.

Neither am i

I will take any piece of advice, so thank you for trying.
Albeit my “common sense” from windows tells me that it shouldnt work… Gonna try it regardless tho.

Edit. Except i dont know how to create a folder there, cause right click (create new) isnt an option

In the Konsole, the command “mkdir” is used to create a folder, which are called “directories” in the Linux world: mkdir
Also, if you go into the Dolphin file manager, navigate to the /etc folder, then right click in there, you’ll have a “create new” option, where you can make a folder, just like in Windoze.

When I said change permissions on the folder, I was wrong. Change permissions on the config file only.

Correct. We do not. The author on flathub would be who supports their flatpak. We can do our best if someone wants to compile something. The best thing to do is submit a package request if you want something more thoroughly supported.
