Lost Plymouth bootsplash on Rolling after installing gcc kernel 6.0.0 upon reboots, after the initial boot

Updated my other desktop (installed to hardware), which included kernel-desktop 6.0.0 and a reinstall of the same version of gawk, then after the initial boot into the 6.0.0 kernel, installed kernel-desktop-gcc.

Upon first boot into the gcc 6.0.0 kernel, the Plymouth bootsplash (OpenMandriva) appeared, but on subsequent reboots, it was replaced by the ‘three blocks’.

Neither plymouth-set-default-theme -R OpenMandriva nor update-grub2 resolved this.

I then rebooted back into kernel-desktop 6.0.0 and the OpenMandriva Plymouth bootsplash successfully reappeared.

6.0.0 was the first gcc kernel I tried on this desktop.

Used ABF Build # 1308 (Xfce Cooker) to install, then switched to Rolling. No issues until this.

This is the history from dnf with graphics card and CPU info:

Maybe start looking in journal logs and see if you can find anything that points to your problems in the logs.

Hi, if you know where to put your hands try to take a look at:

/boot/grub2/grub.conf

@ben79 No errors in Xorg.0.log. Looked for /var/log/syslog, does not exist.

@astragalo /boot/grub2/grub.conf does not exist either. There is a grub.cfg file in /boot/grub2/, but it didn’t tell me anything.

Unless the devs have any ideas, I will leave this as unresolved. It’s possible that something relating to the gcc kernel in some way, is incompatible with this system’s specs.

Switched back to the default kernel again, bootsplash returns.

Yes, sorry but I wrote by heart from the smartphone.

However I have the same problem with the 6.0 kernel

That would explain why I did not see the same thing you were seeing.

General information for all OMLx users: Whenever someone is having problems with booting there are couple of other things to look at. dmesg and journalctl.

Of course one can usually find more than we want to know with:

dmesg --help

journalctl --help

Worth mentioning is that both dmesg and journalctl have lines with the word failed or error and then we ask a dev and they tell us “Ah, that’s nothing to worry about”. I can sometimes spot problems but other times I need to ask one of the smart folks at OpenMandriva matrix channel. Or you can put the entire output in a .txt file for posting in the OM matrix channel, here in forum, or in bug report ect.

I ran dmesg | less so I could scroll through them. I also used journalctl --list-boots and went through several past boots for both the default and gcc kernels, including the current boot, which was listed as 0.

dmesg seemed to display messages relating to the system hardware. journalctl included events before and after Plymouth started and finished, however, no error or failed items were shown.

Please be advised that this issue is not occurring in any of my Plasma or Xfce VirtualBoxes, all using VBoxSVGA for the virtual GPU.

What video card do you have? I have an Amd.

AMD Radeon HD 5450, info in my original post.

Bug report filed:

Did you try

boot to your kernel-desktop-gcc

sudo dracut -f
sudo update-grub2
reboot

?

Yes. Still displays the “three blocks”.

kernel-desktop:

kernel-desktop-gcc:

~]$ rpm -q gawk
gawk-5.1.1-4.x86_64
  • Removed kernel-desktop
  • Booted into kernel-desktop-gcc
  • dracut -f
  • update-grub2
  • (rebooted)

1st reboot - OpenMandriva Lx splash appeared.
2nd reboot - three blocks

  • Reinstalled kernel-desktop
  • Rebooted into kernel-desktop-gcc

1st reboot: OpenManariva Lx splash appeared.
2nd reboot: OpenMandriva Lx splash appeared.
3rd reboot: three blocks

I have AMD Raden hd 8400, maybe it’s a problem with the AMD cards

It’s possible.

Try this command:

sudo /usr/sbin/plymouth-set-default-theme --rebuild-initrd OpenMandriva

Yes. Did not work.

  • Reinstalled kernel-desktop-gcc
1st reboot: OpenMandriva Lx boot splash appeared
2nd reboot: Three blocks boot splash
    sudo /usr/sbin/plymouth-set-default-theme --rebuild-initrd OpenMandriva
