KIO client error: Dolphin cannot access Android smart phone devices

Hi everyone.

Until this evening I have always been able to access my Moto X Android smart phones (designated as XT 1058 and XT 1060 respectively) via USB cable and Dolphin, no problem. After the recommended push update of two files this evening, Dolphin either does not show them as listed under Devices at all, or if it does, I select them and get something like:

“The file or folder udi=/org/kde/solid/udev/sys/devices/pci0000:000000:12.2/usb5/5-3 does not exist.”

(This was a verbatim response to the XT 1060), after which, the device listing for the XT 1060 permanently disappeared from the Dolphin device menu list entirely.

If I unplug and re-plug the USB cable, and attempt to open the XT 1060 with the File Manager through the Device Notifier pop-up screen, I get the same error message prefaced by a heading that identifies this as a KIO client error;

“Error - KIO Client <2>”

I noticed that the error message text string shown above also appears above the Dolphin window as a chain of subdirectories, and they are preceded initially by “mtp:”; in other words, the above message appears separately in a pop-up error message box when I try to invoke Dolphin via the Device Notifier; appearing above the Dolphin file list box is the following text string:

“mtp: > org > kde > solid > udev > sys > devices > pci0000:00 > 0000:00:12.2 > usb5 > 5-3”
(quotes mine)

If I go into my phone settings, and change the connection from a multimedia interface to a camera interface, I can open, view, and download the phone’s photo repertoire with Gwenview, etc., and that all seems to work properly.

I’ve tried warm and cold rebooting, and restarted the phones, there is no difference.

Any thoughts?

I have a Moto g+. I just hooked up the phone to the usb port, and it recognized it right away.

It does look like in your log file that the computer knows the phone is there - it’s just having problems trying to communicate to it. I also noticed that ClamAV is out of date; wondering if ClamAV might be preventing you from transferring files because its out of date. Try updating ClamAV and look at your settings in ClamAV, to make sure that when you updated that it didn’t change the settings on you. Sometimes when ClamAV updates, it goes back to its default settings.

You might want to make sure that your Android OS is up to date. My phone just received an update yesterday.

I truly hope this helps you.

Thanks for the reply.

As I said, until yesterday, I had no problems with Dolphin recognizing either device. After yesterday afternoon, it was a completely different story.

Looking back further into the journalctl log timeline, I see that Clam AV note appearing periodically throughout the entire history. for quite a long time. Do you think that somehow it could have suddenly became a critical factor for Dolphin?

As far as the Android O/S, I have installed the most recent version pushed by my provider, 4.4.2 is the version, and that was installed prior to both the previous proper functioning, as well as the onset of the problem.

In any event, updating Clam AV would be beneficial regardless; I’ll try that and see if it makes any difference.

Thanks again for taking the time to provide your thoughts on the matter.

I found several others reporting same situation in KDE Bugtracking System – Bug 387454

Link:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=387454

In that bug report they are talking about kernel version 4.14.x. That is rather old. anyone using Lx 3 should be using 4.15.12 or 4.15.15. Might help if folks with this issue post what there kernel version is.

Here under 4.15.15 I have a Samsung Galaxy J7 (relatively cheap/low end smart phone) that is visible to Dolphin. Edit: I do have to unlock my phone for Dolphin to see it.

Ben:

Thanks for the reply.

I did notice that the kernel in the bug report was an earlier version, but it stood out to me that the problem details and the error messages were identical to mine.

Regarding the kernel I am using, that was included in my original post as the output of the inxi command, thus:

[michael@michael-pc ~]$ inxi -F -c 0
System: Host: michael-pc Kernel: 4.15.12-desktop-1omv x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: KDE Plasma 5.10.5
Distro: OpenMandrivaLinux 3.0 Einsteinium

Like I had originally written, everything initially was working perfectly with this set-up… Dolphin saw and enabled access to the phones files, photos, transferred everyting exactly as expected; that situation had set the precedent and was fully functional for quite some time, until the failure occurred suddenly without warning, and was noticed for the first time upon my first attempt to open and access the phone with Dolphin following an official OM-pushed two-file system update (I do not recall the file names exactly, but I am fairly certain that of of them started with “lib64…”.)

I suppose I could reinstall the system from scratch, go through all of the updates, meticulously recording all of the file names, and establish an audit trail in order to isolate the problem file… but I was really kinda hoping I wouldn’t have to go to that extreme. (There’s gotta be a better way.)

You seem pretty knowledgeable about things in general… any thoughts about how else I might proceed?

Well, I just finished installing the most recent OM metadata package update, which included the most recent kernel version 4.15.15, hoping for the best.

The problem still remains unchanged, so the problem (and the solution) is not solely dependent on the kernel version.

Here is a segment of the current system journal that appears to be relevant:

I updated my kernel today - and I now have the same problem; however I do have a microcard reader. I tried it and I can read the microcard by taking it out of the phone and reading it that way - which is a pain to be honest.

However, I did have a visit to the OpenMandriva Issue Tracker. Here’s the link:

Bug Tracker on USB

So they already know the issue;it’s going to be addressed shortly.

Not so sure about that. Note the dates on the bug report and the fact that it has not been Confirmed. Also our developer Gabriel Craciunescu in Comment # 2:

Well that’s not true … MTP is supported and works just fine.

Works for me from dolphin using mtp:/Phone_name/ and using
kdeconnect …

Please before this goes any further can we (moderators) get Y’all to mark code as code with the (</>) icon when you post on this forum.

Edit: For those of us that struggle to understand code post the command you use to generate the code. Normally you want to post the entire output to avoid confusion or misinterpretation.

Edit2: If the code is lengthy please use pastebin.com or something similar.

Those with this issue need to run this command as user:

$ mtp-detect

and post just the first part of the output here as code (without you phone’s serial number):

$ mtp-detect
libmtp version: 1.1.14

The above appears to show that MTP is working and phone is clearly recognized. So the issue is probably with Dolphin or an associated application. For fastest results it would be advised to go upstream and ask about this on the KDE forum or talk to a Dolphin developer at KDE.org. Edit (dadgummit!): If anyone does go upstream please post a link here so the rest of us can follow if we wish to.

Screen-shot of a Samsung Galaxy J7 semi-smart phone in Dolphin.

So this issue seems to be one we can narrow done to Motorola phones and Dolphin unless it turns out that MTP isn’t seeing the Motorola phones.

Edit: There is a problem or to though. So far I can not open anything, I’ve tried to open mp4 and jpg files with the error “The process for the mtp protocol died unexpectedly.”

Edit2: Trying to open photos with Gwenview gives “Could not read. Reason: Could not claim the USB device”. Trying to open photos with Digikam gives no error but does not work either.

Dadgummit: I spoke to soon, there was a setting I missed on my phone. I can access photos with Dolphin and Gwenview. Probably music too if I had any. Can’t find the mp4 file I saw earlier.

Your Dolphin screen shot looks similar to what I saw and was able to access in Dolphin when my Moto X phones were recognized before the problem occurred.

It seems the same as in

https://forum3.openmandriva.org/t/kio-mtp-not-working/1680

There are many alternative explanations and suggested fixes presented, involving similar but not exactly identical conditions.

I begin with this premise:
It had all been working perfectly until something changed that.
I did not (knowingly, anyway) intentionally initiate the change.

How would you approach the problem?

Here are my thoughts in that regard; see if they make sense to you:

  1. My first considered course of action would be to find out how I could isolate and determine the agent of change responsible for the problem… does that seem reasonable to you?
  2. Apparently we know that the sum total of the identically configured hardware involved is not the problem, because nothing hardware configuration-wise has changed between the working system state and the non-working system state.
  3. Following the same pattern of attempted access that previously was successful to the first occurring evidence of failure will yield a discernible deviation from expected response compared to known previous successful patterns.

FIRST previous successful sequence:

  • A. Connect active phone to active desktop machine via USB cable (same machine, same phone, same
    cable, same USB connector)

  • B. Open Dolphin

  • C. Select device (either XT 1060 or XT 1058) from Dolphin Devices list

  • D. Navigate phone’s file system appearing in Dolphin

NOW:
Dolphin’s response to the device selection is:
“The file or folder udi=/org/kde/solid/udev/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:12.2/usb5/5-3 does not exist.”
(Quotes mine)

If I then right click on the screen, then Open With/Graphics/ScreenGrab, I get the following error message from KIOExec:

If I then right click on the Dolphin screen, and then click Properties, I get this:

SECOND previous successful sequence:

  • A. Connect active phone to active desktop machine via USB cable (same machine, same phone, same
    cable, same USB connector)
  • B. Click “Open with File Manager” in Device Notifier pop-up window
  • C Navigate phone’s file system appearing in Dolphin

NOW:
KIO Client’s response is:

(Interestingly, if I open Dolphin AFTER plugging the USB cable to the phone, the device does not appear in the Devices list.)

When I search root and all subdirectories for filename “5-3” (quotes mine) I get:

My thought then goes to
Who should have created the missing file?
When should it have been created?
What prevented the file creation?

Your thoughts?

Did you use a different usb cable ? other than the one you used before all this happened ?

Edit: Post can’t be empty so I have to write something. Apparently Discourse considers quotes to be “empty” which frankly seems lacking in respect for others.
