**Title: Kernel 7.2.6 upgrade omits ath10k_pci module package, disabling QCA9377 Wi-Fi
Summary
After upgrading OpenMandriva ROME Rolling from kernel 7.0.3 to kernel 7.2.6, Wi-Fi disappeared completely from NetworkManager.
The Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 wireless controller remained visible on the PCI bus, but kernel 7.2.6 did not have the ath10k_pci module installed. Installing the separately packaged kernel module restored Wi-Fi.
This appears to be a kernel packaging or dependency issue: the appropriate hardware-specific module package was available in the official repository but was not installed automatically with the new desktop kernel.
System information
- Distribution: OpenMandriva Lx 26.09 (ROME) Rolling
- Build ID: 20260915.01
- Working kernel:
7.0.3-desktop-1omv2602 - Affected kernel:
7.2.6-desktop-1omv2690 - Architecture: x86_64
- Wireless controller: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 802.11ac
- PCI ID:
[168c:0042] - Subsystem: Lenovo
[17aa:0901] - Required driver:
ath10k_pci - Network management: NetworkManager
Observed behaviour
Under kernel 7.0.3:
Kernel driver in use: ath10k_pci
Kernel modules: ath10k_pci
NetworkManager detected the wireless interface normally:
DEVICE TYPE STATE CONNECTION
wlp1s0 wifi connected WiFi-A77D
Under kernel 7.2.6, NetworkManager could not detect a Wi-Fi device or display available wireless networks.
The module was present for kernel 7.0.3:
/lib/modules/7.0.3-desktop-1omv2602/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath10k/ath10k_pci.ko.zst
However, querying it for the new kernel failed:
$ modinfo -k 7.2.6-desktop-1omv2690 ath10k_pci
modinfo: ERROR: Module ath10k_pci not found.
The initially installed 7.2.6-related packages were:
kernel-desktop-7.2.6-1.x86_64
kernel-desktop-modules-nouveau-7.2.6-1.x86_64
kernel-headers-7.2.6-1.x86_64
The required Atheros module package was available from the official Rolling repository:
kernel-desktop-modules-ath10k_pci-7.2.6-1.x86_64
Resolution
The problem was resolved with:
sudo dnf install kernel-desktop-modules-ath10k_pci-7.2.6-1.x86_64
sudo depmod -a 7.2.6-desktop-1omv2690
The installed module then resolved correctly:
/lib/modules/7.2.6-desktop-1omv2690/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath10k/ath10k_pci.ko.zst
Its dependencies—including cfg80211, mac80211, ath, and ath10k_core—also resolved correctly.
After rebooting into kernel 7.2.6:
$ uname -r
7.2.6-desktop-1omv2690
$ nmcli device status
DEVICE TYPE STATE CONNECTION
wlp1s0 wifi connected WiFi-A77D
lo loopback connected (externally) lo
p2p-dev-wlp1s0 wifi-p2p disconnected --
Expected behaviour
When installing or upgrading to a desktop kernel, DNF should automatically install the kernel-module package required by detected, currently active hardware—or the upgrade process should otherwise ensure that essential networking modules remain available after reboot.
At minimum, users should not lose their only network connection because a previously included driver has moved into a separate package without that package being pulled in automatically.
Requested investigation
Please review:
- Whether
kernel-desktop-modules-ath10k_pcishould be an automatic dependency or recommended package for systems using supported Atheros hardware. - Whether the kernel upgrade tooling should detect active modules and install their corresponding split packages.
- Whether other hardware drivers split into individual packages can be omitted in the same way.
- Whether the kernel or update package should provide clearer warnings before reboot when a currently active network driver will be unavailable under the new kernel.
The older kernel remained bootable, which provided a recovery path, but users without another operating system or wired connection may otherwise be left without network access.Description of the issue (screenshots if relevant):**
