Issues with Wifi on kernel 6.19.0

Hey everybody,

It seems we have an issue with Kernel 6.19.0 and Wifi. I have two laptops on which I run OM: a work laptop I re-installed about a month ago on Cooker, and a personal laptop that has been running ROME.

I first encountered this issue with the laptop (Intel/nvidia) running Cooker. It would not get an IPv4 address automatically when connecting to Wifi. I had to issue these two commands to get connected:

sudo dhclient -r [interface]
sudo dhclient [interface]

These problems persisted the whole time I was running Cooker. When we did the UM, I switched this laptop to the ROME repos (it’s a work laptop; it has to be stable and reasonably up to date) and the problem persisted.

My personal laptop (AMD Ryzen 7 Thinkpad) was always running ROME, so I updated that when the UM happened, and I started having the same issue on that laptop. I tried switching NetworkManager to its internal DHCP; I tried explicitly setting NetworkManager to use dhclient; nothing worked.

On a hunch, I tried simply booting the 6.18 kernel it had before, and Wifi immediately worked with no problems.

Is it possible to get a new kernel for ROME to fix this issue? Something’s not right with the 6.19.0 kernel we have.

Is anybody else having this problem? It’s consistent for me on two laptops.

Some further information: IPv6 assigns immediately; IPv4 hangs. You can force it to succeed by using the two commands above. Here are some NetworkManager log messages showing that apparently, DHCP4 isn’t being requested:

I am not having any problems with wifi with kernel 6.19.0. But then I do not do anything with wifi beyond selecting my router from the list in the system tray NetworkManager widget and entering the correct password. Normally I do this when I first install a system on the ‘Live’ iso and that’s it, it just works from then on.

Oh, when the kwallet thing-a-ma-bob pops up I use no password, leave it blank.

The issue happens on first login, as well as if I put either laptop to sleep and wake it back up again. I can always get it to connect if I issue these two commands:

sudo dhclient -r [interface]
sudo dhclient [interface]

That’s fine for me as a workaround, but not for my wife. So I haven’t run the UM on her laptop yet.

I’m also having problems after the Rolling update. The connection drops after a few seconds, then reactivates and drops again shortly after.
For now, I’ve fixed it with a USB Wi-Fi card, while I wait to better understand the problem. With kernel 6.18.x, everything was fine.

On the laptop with the cooker, however, everything is ok, it probably only affects certain cards

This problem needs a bug report filed by someone that has the issue.

As far as I’m concerned, I solved it in a very simple way… I just had to disable Bluetooth and the connection became stable again.

Still seems to indicate some regression in kernel 6.19.0. Along with it killing VirtualBox. User should not need to disable bluetooth to have working wifi.

While wifi is working for me enough people are reporting this that someone somewhere should be keelhauled. Or at least the problem should be fixed. Dadgummit.
