Hello everyone. Ashwin here, from India.
I’m a software developer by trade. I use pc for programming, gaming, some graphic designing and music recording.
I have been using linux since the days of Ubuntu 8. And even before by trying out various distros that used to come with magazine cds. I used distro hop as a hobby, so I have tried most distros, before settling on Pop_OS since last few years as my main. However, they have made some strange decisions which left me wanting to move away for some time.
I found open mandriva, like most new users here apparently, through Lunduke. And politics aside, I have been looking for a rolling release distro which is more stable and a bit more ready to use out of the box than arch. My main contenders were void (which I have run as my main for sometime in the past) and openmandriva. I am trying open mandriva on my laptop rn (my main is a desktop and my laptop is my side machine and beside my home server I only use these two).
Although I have used plasma in the past, I never liked it (too much bloat?). However, I’m pleasantly surprised by how smooth it has become recently. So currently I’m using the plasma spin. I’m certainly missing the tiling features that Pop_OS’s gnome had out of the box. One of these days, I’ll get a tiling wm and play around with it so much that my main work gets delayed! (like it used to when I ran arch and i3 as my main). For now I had to spend half a day to setup keyboard shortcuts to somewhat match my flow. And no, I wont be using COSMIC. Are there any plans to support hyperland? I haven’t tried it as of yet, but so many people have called the dev a nuuuuuhhtttzeeeee that I really want to try it now.
So far, I’m liking OM. After a few weeks of testing I may migrate my main to OM.
Welcome to OM, we are now legion from Lunduke’s videos, we found the right place, no politics, no bs.
Welcome. We are glad to have you here. We are a small distro, but we have been growing recently and there are opportunities for members with skills.
Welcome! We’re glad you’ve decide to give Open Mandriva a try.
Welcome
Welcome aboard.
Welcome!
Welcome! Also, if I’m not mistaken, there are some posts here on the forum from OM users who also run Hyprland. I fully plan to start messing around with Hyprland once I have the free time to do so. I feel like configuring/building an whole DE out of a tiling window manager would end up taking up quite a bit of time
Oh yes, its a never ending process
When you think you’ve got it right and now its time to get to work, you start writing those damn DTOs for that new API, then you start wondering, hey is this status bar taking too much screen, maybe I’ll subtract 2pxs. Then you get on your fav search engine (which hopefully isn’t google) and search for alternatives for this status bar that you’ve spent several afternoons configuring. Then you think, do I really need a status bar visible all the time, should I write a script which enables/disables status bar on a shortcut. And you open a new terminal, cd into your local bin, nvim statusbartoggle.sh.
You suddenly realize its dinner time and you haven’t finished your work. You write on a post it note “Do not waste time configuring i3, its perfect as it is” and stick it below your monitor among the “Do not slouch” and “Drink plenty water” stickies.
Next day the thought of a new colour scheme invades your mind as soon as you’ve resumed your boring work. Yet another day that tool which creates a colour palette from your wallpaper seems like a good integration.
And so on.
This is why I started using gnome/xfce.
Greetings!
We have it packaged already, but wayland will be unstable for a while.
