My name is Rich, and I’m here investigating OM for a possible switch. I was a Mandrake and then a Mandriva user from 1998 to about 2010, a member of the Mandriva Club (anybody remember that?), and a huge fan of the OS. I switched away before Mandriva went under because I got in a fight with one of the maintainers on their forums about the importance of not waiting till the next release of the OS to update Firefox. I needed the new release to support a feature my company was using (I don’t remember the details at this point), and they refused to update it.
I then traveled the long, winding road of distro hopping. Because I was a KDE guy due to Mandrake, I went from Kubuntu, to openSUSE, back to Kubuntu, to Manjaro, Arch, and EndeavourOS. I have been in the Arch world for the longest (since maybe 2016), because I found the wonder of a rolling distro I could install once and never install again until I got a new computer. I also used Fedora for about a year, as it’s the distro my company installs by default.
The thing keeping me from daily driving OM right now is packages. I have submitted some package requests and will likely submit more. I’m really happy a Mandriva descendant went the rolling route. Driving OM ROME for me would be like coming home after a long journey, with all the benefits of that journey’s experience intact.
I lead the documentation team for another open source company, so I am a writer by trade. I have also written one novel so far and hope to write more. You can find out more about that stuff at my website.
As seems common around here of late, I was also pointed to OM by Lunduke, randomly, after I searched for a non-woke Linux distro (I’m not a regular Lunduke guy). I already had an OM VM I’d installed last summer (I’ve been watching the project from the sidelines for a while), and I quickly brought it up to date and saw that many more packages have been added.
This community is much more friendly than the Arch community, though some might argue that isn’t saying much. I’ve already been welcomed and helped in my first post, and I’m still only running OM in a VM. Thanks for being so welcoming and responsive!
