Hi, … um, … Drakes? ![]()
Age verification finally motivated me to look for a distro (again), and since Fedora is heavily politicized I’m going to fix that problem at the same time. That really narrows down the possibilities. I was never a Mandrake user back on the day and I admit I didn’t think of OM until I saw it mentioned in this context (it doesn’t matter, but since you’ve guessed already yes it was by Lunduke). I’ve been playing with the live system alongside a few others on a mini PC I happen to have laying about, and I thought I’d report on my first impression even though these are probably only what you expect. Two main things stand out:
-
It feels very nice and polished. I already use Plasma so the familiarity helps, but never the less it seems nicely done and attractive. That’s not the only thing I care about, I started using Linux before you could be sure that you could get anything other than the command line going. Still, it’s nice and, more importantly, indicates care and attention. That matters.

It’s quirky. I expected it from reviews, and it does feel that way. The non-standard updates bother me a bit, if only because I already have habits on how to use dnf, but I think tolerable. I do think it’s likely to turn some people off, but so far it doesn’t bump it off my serious consideration list.

It’s a bit disappointing that there is no official word on age verification, since that’s really the factor that made it work distro testing again, but it seems non-political enough. More like Linux used to be before the culture started taking a turn for the worst.
So far it was a pretty cursory test, but OM seems like an underappreciated distro that deserves the attention spike it’s getting. Nice job.
