Cinnamon DE install

Hi all,

I’m not really asking for help here, I know the cinnamon desktop isn’t a priority and maybe it doesnt have a maintainer yet but maybe somrthing in this post will be useful.

For the last couple of weeks I have been trying to get the Cinnamon desktop installed from the different isos the cinnamon spin isos rock rome and also ontop of plasma gnome xfce ect. All fail with the same problem after loging in an open terminal window not the command line. From there i am able to open some gui apps so it seems the problem is with cinnamon-desktop.

So, I moved on to trying to install from source after installing rome plasma and xfce spin. Both failed with the same problem. I followed the instructions for other systems here

After finding and installing all the dependencies I started the build and install the different cinnamon elements. But, when I try to

meson setup builddir

for cinnamon-session it fails with dependecy cinnamon-desktop not found even though i was able to compile and install it without error.

I thought maybe this is related to why cinnamon isn’t working on OM, I still have xfce installed so if there are logs or other info that would be useful let me know, I am not that technical so I would probably need some instructions.

It may be helpful to look over the recipe (.spec file) to see how the dependencies are laid out.

The Cooker chat would also be a good place to talk about it and get some guidance about doing a local build and testing it. We have specific things we use in our build environment that may or may not translate to the results of what you are doing, so we need to be able to repeat the build in a way it could be included later.

Hi Thanks for the reply. I haven’t abandoned this I just need some time to do some research. I am going through the resources provided by @grafi
How to help with package maintenance - #3 by grafi.
What i don’t want to do is jump into somehing to over my head that i end wasting your’s and other’s time. I have compiled and installed some simple programs before but a whole DE is something else. I took a look at the .spec file and realised I need to read up on some things first. That said I will come back again when I think I know enough to start asking intelligent questions. Thanks againg for all the hard work you guys put into this project you are really building a great distro and also a great community. If there are other docs or resources that would be helpful for me please leave links to them here.
