Hello OpenMandriva community,
I’ve recently set up a Brother MFC-J805DW all-in-one printer on my OpenMandriva computer. The installation mostly went well, but I’m having a scanner integration problem.
My System
OpenMandriva Lx Rock (64-bit)
Brother MFC-J805DW
Connected via Wi-Fi
System completely updated
The Issue
Printing is flawless.
Applications like Simple Scan and XSane allow me to scan without any troubles.
But the problem comes when I take the route of the printer’s control panel and click “Scan to PC”.
The printer is showing “No PC Found”
or just not managing to communicate with the computer at all.
Both my computer and the printer are connected to the same network and initiating scanning from the computer works as usual.
I’ve tried
Re-installed Brother scanner packages
Give the printer a static IP address
Turned off the firewall for testing purposes
Power-cycled both the printer and computer
Checked network connectivity between devices
Installed the Brother Scan Key Tool which came with the Linux downloads
It’s really odd because the scanner device is actually fine. If I do the scanning from the PC side, everything works as it should. It is only when the scanning is started from the printer’s panel that the problem comes up.
I would appreciate if somebody who has experience with Brother multifunction printers on RPM-based distributions can recommend me the right way.

Does the printer UI have an option to scan the network for devices?
If so…
Maybe run the printer SW on your PC, scan for devices from the printer…or try with the printer SW running on the PC.
In short, establish communication from the PC, then see if the printer sees it. If it doesn’t, well, I’m all out of ideas. If it does, maybe you can find some kind of workaround.
Was that printer ever used with a different version of Linux?
I’m asking because I’ve never had a scanner work like that (brother or otherwise) on any version of linux.
Windows yes. Linux no.
Initiating the scan from the computer, as you say works fine. Attempting to have the scanner control panel initiate the scan has never worked.
Not on Mint, Debian, Ubuntu, or even Manjaro for me. It is likely some combination of a port issue along with some sort of “server” or daemon running in the background. Works on windows, but not in the linux security stack
I have experience with EPSON-like printers. If everything works fine with applications like XSane, it means the devices are all on the same network and were registered from your Gnome / KDE settings. It’s a good start
For linux, looking at search engines / AI, it looks like you have to manually register and setup the printer / scanner with the tools provided from Brotherhood calledbrsaneconfig and brscan-skey, and you should good to go.
