Another new arrival from Lunduke

Hi everyone!

I’m an Australian who started messing with Linux with a Linux-on-FAT distribution called DragonLinux about 25 years ago, and have been using it on and off since then. I’ve been using Windows 10 because of gaming, and then I installed a gaming-focussed Ubuntu spin a couple of months ago. After watching the Lunduke video, I decided that OpenMandriva sounds like a good place for me.

It’s been a pretty rough start, but I’m happy to report that I am now posting from OMLx!

Welcome! We are glad to have you with us.

@TehMagilla I know from the Matrix that you had some struggles, but you were willing to work through it. Thanks for sticking with it. At least you are rare. The majority of new users have no issues at all. In fact more people surf these forums anonymously than those who register.

There’s almost always challenges to large changes, such as migrating to a new distro. We’re glad you’re here!

In my case, it was the distro not actually working on my PC, which is unusual (for me)…

Did you get it all fixed up?

Errr… it’s working now, for a given value of working. Still some jank hanging around, but there’s no huge rush to fix that.

Short version:

  1. Live environment hard crashes when trying to start SDDM
  2. I log in via CLI mode. startx works fine, so I use that to get into Plasma and run the installer
  3. My grub setup is now nuked, PC won’t boot
  4. Fix grub settings
  5. OMLx local install also crashes while trying to start SDDM
  6. Boot to CLI, try to find a version of KeepassXC that has Yubikey support (thank you, flatpak)
  7. Lots of tinkering with boot options, updates, nvidia drivers etc etc etc, with the help of the amazing folks on matrix
  8. Remove SDDM, install LightDM
  9. I NOW HAVE GUI BOOT!
  10. Plasma is gone, because it was attached to the SDDM install. H*ck.
  11. Install Gnome. I now have a working desktop! Wheeeeeeeeee
  12. Install Plasma6. Doesn’t work? Don’t know why?
  13. Continue using Gnome for now, but I do want Plasma6 back…

Oh, yeah. Also KDE/Plasma not connecting to Google accounts, so working rclone out so I can get to my files. That was also fun.

Welcome! I’m new myself. I came from the Debian world, so I’m still getting familiar how things work around here. I admire your persistence!
