Hey everyone! In the hopefully not too distant future, I’ll be upgrading an old PC that I built back in 2016. At the time, I needed a cheap, barebones PC that could run Windows 10 (this was before I switched to Linux), so I’ve only run native graphics from the intel CPU. I’m looking to upgrade this PC to become my daily driver soon, and I’m trying to decide on what GPU to go with. As someone who’s currently using a decent laptop also with native intel graphics, I’ve largely ignored GPU issues when I’ve seen posts about them. From what I’ve read, though, it seems like AMD GPUs may play nicer with Linux, but I figured I’d ask the community to see what everyone thinks.
So, based on people’s experiences, do y’all think it would be better to go with AMD, or NVIDIA?
Right now? AMD. Nvidia drivers have been an endless cause of frustration in my house the last couple of months, so much so that I got rid of all of them for AMD.
Yeah I’m mostly leaning toward an RX580. I also looked into the Intel GPUs, but my motherboard can only support up to a 7th gen CPU. It’s recommended by Intel to use at least a 10th gen with their GPUs…so those are likely out
It’s been a number of years since I purchased an NVIDIA card. Back when I still played PC games that was the best option after 3dfx died. Getting Linux to work with NVIDIA was always a chore, but their binary blobs seemed to work well enough.
On principle I’ve only purchased AMD discrete graphics or integrated AMD or Intel graphics and they’ve all worked great for what I need. If you’re not trying to play video games and get higher FPS scores than your friends then stay away from NVIDIA. Go AMD discrete if you need the power or lack the motherboard support for integrated.
AMD best support on linux ever. Problems may occur if you need Radeon pro functionalities but it is highly unlikely
For example, this card AMD Radeon PRO W7500 8GB GDDR6
