Age verification for social media only or will they block you from the net?

The age verification stuff seems pretty ridiculous to me and is also a masks off moment for systemD not that anyone is that surprised. However, I hate social media bs anyway. I also look at the net/search in live mode to protect my data sometimes. Will this still be possible even with this stuff nerfed? We really need a new browser and init system for linux….

I think the frustration comes from several things:

  • People do not understand how their software and system are comprised
  • The assumption is (mostly correct) that distributions just package things as the upstream intended
  • There is no realistic way to police traffic on the Internet based on intrinsic values without very elaborate methods of spying and privacy invasion.

The larger problem is when a single entity determines what everyone else must do (i.e. systemd/wayland a la IBM/RH). Once the addiction is identified and the dependency is built, then average people will just accept what they are given.

Linux, overall, just like most kernels, is not necessarily hard-wired to SystemD specifically. Alpine Linux, despite no xLibre atp, does not have systemd either. Or glibc alike.

If we have SonicDE and xLibre running on top of Alpine, that may be semi-bearable temporary fix until other independent distros distance themselves from systemd as well.

Or fork it and gradually cut it into more modular pieces, like i3wm or bspwm that we have to assemble basically from scratch from pieces and config manually. Neither of the two have single point of failure really.

We are doing something like this already.

IMO the goal is total control of the net - when I saw the router ban in the states, I knew it was rapidly approaching.

For me and my house, I have Artix / Vendewolf (Devuan based) in testing as I don’t want SystemDefect and Wayland crap on my machine.

Thankfully, OMLx is giving Xlibre as an option, but they should consider the same with SystemDefect.

If you want to “own” your hardware, I suggest doing the following now, get a cheap quad core computer, get 8-16GB of RAM, ~ 200GB+ HDD (whatever you can afford). I picked up one that had Mint pre-installed, HP Elite desk for $90.

Put Vendewolf on it and have the following plan:

  1. OPNSense VM router.
  2. PiHole
  3. Project NOMAD to pull down a lot of remote resources to a local service.
  4. Immich (local photo hosting)
  5. Bitwarden (local password hosting)
  6. Plex Media server (related get a cheap USB DVD player, watch from there - or rip your media to the plex server)

I don’t know when it’s going to happen, but I strongly feel they are going to start locking down the net.

I started the scripts to do this work over here:

Feel free to modify them for OMLx if you want to use that for your server.

  1. 100% agreement, and it’s only a very small minority of us concerned about Age Verification. Most people don’t know, don’t care until the screen pops up asking for their ID.
  2. That is mostly correct, this is what worries me with distros that take a passive stance, ‘We aren’t going to do anything about age verification’ by default means they aren’t going to modify the tools they use to remove it from Flathub, SystemD or DBUS.
  3. Well that doesn’t stop them from trying - I think this is connected to the router ban, and wanting to make sure the only routers in the states have their back door. I don’t know if you’ve heard of it, they also have PRISM which they attempted to store internet and phone traffic. So how do they do it?

Start by saying you want to protect the children from smut.

Create a crisis where someone abuses the system and children see smut.

Demand Digital ID and Biometrics be connected to every device you access.

The current bills are absolutely unenforceable. It is obviously a framework step for something much worse.
