Been using Pop!_OS (I always have to check the proper spelling of the damn name) for a few years now. Ditched Windows aroud 2019 and newer looked back. I think I am over GNOME (the regular and pop flavour of it) and want to try another distro as well. Plus I feel like a child in grammar school using some kid oriented OS when I say the name out loud.
I bought my old work laptop for cheap, a 5+ year-old Thinkpad with dock and dual batteries from my work and decided to try OM Rome on it. Everything went quite smoothly until I tried playing any sound. The volume of the speakers was very quiet and crackly on full. Headphones worked via 3.5 mm jack though. I researched the damn issue for days and tried all kinds of solutions.
Then I opened the back of the machine. I used this laptop mostly in the office, but took it quite often to the shop floor. The shop has aluminium and other metal dusts everywhere and I used to just lay the thing on any dirty surface.
Yes, the speaker magnets were full of the stuff. Now after dabbing the speakers with masking tape a few times the dust is gone and the speakers work once more. For once it was not a driver issue!
EDIT: Well, I actually had some trouble but I’ll post those questions to a appropriate forum at a later date.
