Video From FUTO "Why Is Open Source Failing?"

This video gave me some things to think about and I thought some of you might be interested in the topic.

I find myself agreeing with a lot of what the guy is saying.

Sorry for posting an older video, but I am playing catchup on my research here, you guys have a head start on me.

Similar topic on this one with Lunduke.

Seriously good conversation on the practical issues of Open Source.

I always thought Lunduke was a more ideological guy than this about open source but it seems he lines up with myself more than I thought, on this one issue anyway.

I think people on this forum could stand to take in some of these ideas about competition and the need to treat your software as a product being purchased instead of a donation to be taken advantage of.

This guy refers to his users as ā€œcustomersā€. Bravo! Someone has the correct take!

My estimation of Lunduke has risen greatly after this one. Normally his videos are just drama fests, this one had real substance. I wish he would do more like this, but I guess the drama gets more views.

The biggest problem with open source is that it isn’t freedom software. It doesn’t protect the four essential freedoms and so depending on the license, it can either be:

  1. Too restrictive to redistribute.
  2. Trademark requirements added on top of the code’s copyright license can make a program nonfree.
  3. The criteria for open source are concerned solely with the use of the source code rather than what users are free to do.
  4. Because of the above, megacorporations can exploit open source software (because they are ā€œpermissiveā€ and not freedom-protecting).

FUTO (ā€œsource firstā€) is trying to reinvent the wheel of open source, and so because of that, ā€œsource firstā€ will create much of the same problems, or problems just as big as ā€œopen sourceā€ because they’re not actually protecting user’s right to ā€œspeakā€ (use, modify, redistribute source code for any purpose) freely. The solution to proprietary software was here before ā€œopen sourceā€ was a thing: ā€œopen sourceā€ is a perversion of freedom software that doesn’t prioritize the rights of users but shareholder benefits, which allows for user exploitation.

I like what they are doing and I agree with their rationalization for doing it.

If you watch the video I think it explains exactly why number 4 is wrong. The others are not important.

I think it perfectly matches my view of what FOSS should be.

Sure, if you support source first, then you support source first. It’s another view that FUTO made because they don’t actually support software freedom, in the same vein that OSI and ā€œopen sourceā€ don’t either: they both have the same problem and will ultimately result in the same amount of ā€œsuccessā€ for the user.

Sure, fine, whatever. They make good shit, I use several of their products on my phone and server.

I don’t have the freedom hangup you guys have.

Our hangup on ā€˜freedom’ comes from the concept of ownership. If I own my computer then I should be able to use and modify anything that is installed on it however I see fit, because it is my computer. Just like I’m allowed to spray paint my PC case purple if I choose, I should be able to view and modify the code of anything that is installed on my computer.

I understand. You guys don’t need to keep saying it to me and I don’t need to keep saying I disagree. It is not a misunderstanding, it is a fundamental difference of values and personalities.

We are never going to agree on this particular issue:

  • I think open source makes the best software, but I don’t care about the ā€œfreeā€ part and think it is actually just a LARP. I only care about a group’s freedom to self determination and governance, not an individual’s freedom to do as they please.
  • You think ā€œfreedomā€ is an individual thing and can be somehow granted by a software license. And somehow you must accept a specific ideology to enjoy open source software.

Peace brothers, peace. I want to simmer down the conflict, that was never my intention.

I totally underestimated how dearly you guys hold this stuff. Like it’s your balls or something.

I do not wish to antagonize you guys anymore than I already have. I’m used to chatting with guys who like to bance back and forth in manly and brutal ways but you guys take things way too seriously and I don’t want to push anyone over the edge.

I feel like I maybe played too rough and accidentally broke something that I did not realize was so delicate. As if I’m used to playing with iron and this community is glass. It is just the nature of the people involved that are different. I should have been more careful.

I can’t take it back, but I would like to move past it.

For some odd reason FUTO isn’t posted to Odysee anymore. Speaking of things that are not big tech. There are a lot of videos there like this one though- https://odysee.com/@FUTO:e/why-hasn’t-open-source-won-panel-with:6

I like Odysee technically, but there is not much to watch on there that is worth watching.

I have no idea what type of person you are or what you look for. But there a is a lot to watch on Odysee. But then again maybe those things aren’t what your interested in. Some of it is stuff like Brodie Roberson whose Odysee gets all the same videos from his youtube. I will admit though that a lot of the stuff does not appeal to many people. But in terms of volume and interest at least for some people I have seen a lot. Its also true that I’ve used it for many years. Like four years.

I’ll check it out again, it’s been awhile.

I don’t watch too many videos except about my industry usually.

Brodie is not really my style, no offense to him, he is just of a younger generation and I do not jive with his sarcasm.

The only streaming videos I watch for entertainment are from unauthorized.tv, I have a subscription there.

Oh ok. I see. Gotcha
