Seriously good conversation on the practical issues of Open Source.
I always thought Lunduke was a more ideological guy than this about open source but it seems he lines up with myself more than I thought, on this one issue anyway.
I think people on this forum could stand to take in some of these ideas about competition and the need to treat your software as a product being purchased instead of a donation to be taken advantage of.
This guy refers to his users as ācustomersā. Bravo! Someone has the correct take!
My estimation of Lunduke has risen greatly after this one. Normally his videos are just drama fests, this one had real substance. I wish he would do more like this, but I guess the drama gets more views.
Trademark requirements added on top of the codeās copyright license can make a program nonfree.
The criteria for open source are concerned solely with the use of the source code rather than what users are free to do.
Because of the above, megacorporations can exploit open source software (because they are āpermissiveā and not freedom-protecting).
FUTO (āsource firstā) is trying to reinvent the wheel of open source, and so because of that, āsource firstā will create much of the same problems, or problems just as big as āopen sourceā because theyāre not actually protecting userās right to āspeakā (use, modify, redistribute source code for any purpose) freely. The solution to proprietary software was here before āopen sourceā was a thing: āopen sourceā is a perversion of freedom software that doesnāt prioritize the rights of users but shareholder benefits, which allows for user exploitation.
Sure, if you support source first, then you support source first. Itās another view that FUTO made because they donāt actually support software freedom, in the same vein that OSI and āopen sourceā donāt either: they both have the same problem and will ultimately result in the same amount of āsuccessā for the user.
Our hangup on āfreedomā comes from the concept of ownership. If I own my computer then I should be able to use and modify anything that is installed on it however I see fit, because it is my computer. Just like Iām allowed to spray paint my PC case purple if I choose, I should be able to view and modify the code of anything that is installed on my computer.
I understand. You guys donāt need to keep saying it to me and I donāt need to keep saying I disagree. It is not a misunderstanding, it is a fundamental difference of values and personalities.
We are never going to agree on this particular issue:
I think open source makes the best software, but I donāt care about the āfreeā part and think it is actually just a LARP. I only care about a groupās freedom to self determination and governance, not an individualās freedom to do as they please.
You think āfreedomā is an individual thing and can be somehow granted by a software license. And somehow you must accept a specific ideology to enjoy open source software.
Peace brothers, peace. I want to simmer down the conflict, that was never my intention.
I totally underestimated how dearly you guys hold this stuff. Like itās your balls or something.
I do not wish to antagonize you guys anymore than I already have. Iām used to chatting with guys who like to bance back and forth in manly and brutal ways but you guys take things way too seriously and I donāt want to push anyone over the edge.
I feel like I maybe played too rough and accidentally broke something that I did not realize was so delicate. As if Iām used to playing with iron and this community is glass. It is just the nature of the people involved that are different. I should have been more careful.
I canāt take it back, but I would like to move past it.
I have no idea what type of person you are or what you look for. But there a is a lot to watch on Odysee. But then again maybe those things arenāt what your interested in. Some of it is stuff like Brodie Roberson whose Odysee gets all the same videos from his youtube. I will admit though that a lot of the stuff does not appeal to many people. But in terms of volume and interest at least for some people I have seen a lot. Its also true that Iāve used it for many years. Like four years.
