I am a bit confused here. The error message appears in Kate?
Your trash folder is located at:
~/.local/share/Trash/
The first thing I would try is a reboot before messing with permissions.
If that doesn’t work, what happens when you try to access your Trash from Dolphin instead of the taskbar widget?
Everything is OK from dolphin.
I checked directory Trash and all files inside: all the permissions are regular.
I can also empty trash regularly from taskbar. Just, I cannot open.
When I updated from plasma5, no problems arose with trash from task bar.
Now
Are you using Wayland or X11?
Are you using the Trash icon that is built into the System Tray? Or the Trash icon widget outside the System Tray? These are two different icons. The Trash icon widget is designed for use as a desktop icon. But it is possible to place it on the Taskbar.
X11
I added the object to the taskbar.
Does the Trash widget function as intended?
I am starting to suspect a corrupted file that works in the background to make the Trash icon functional. It has been determined that the trash folder is not corrupt, because it is possible to access it from Dolphin.
When I click on the Trash icon, either the one in the System Tray or the widget icon, it opens Dolphin and brings up the Trash folder in a new tab. I believe that is how it is supposed to function.
If a file is corrupt, I wouldn’t know where to begin to know where to look. That is far above my pay grade.
Did you check the Properties of the object you added?
Desktop items can be modified to ‘open with’ other apps, and if you choose the wrong one, they won’t work.
Maybe it was set to open with Kate instead of Dolphin?
Perhaps deleting the existing widget, then creating a new widget, double checking its "Properties” to make sure it opens with Dolphin, and re-adding it to your task bar?
Infact, if I try opening the trash on the taskbar, it is opened by kate. So that’s why it gives problems.
When I open it by Dolphin, no problems arise.
I tried also to delete the widget and add again to the taskbar, but it is always opened by kate.
At moment, I don’t see how change the opening application on the taskbar.
Apparently, no way exists to change the opening application.
At least, I cannot see it.
We should get our hands on your computer in order to understand what’s the issue about.
Not being it possible I’d suggest as workaround to write all the steps you made (don’t forget anything even if you think it’s useless) for someone to reproduce it and hopefully provide some help.
In addition to following the suggestions they gave you, just to rule out this possible problem, try to run a checkdisk of the /home partition (but at this point also of all the others) clearly you should do it by booting an external system, from usb or cd / dvd.
Normally the recycle bin should be opened via the default file-manager of your desktop, in my case the DE is LxQT and the file-manager pcmanfm-qt, if you use plasma, usually the default file-manager is Dolphin, so the widget on the desktop should not open with Kate (which is an advanced text editor) so: in the Plasma settings, “Default Applications” section, you should check which application is set up and change it if necessary.
