cifs in fstab failure after upgrade
Relevant informations (hardware involved, software version, logs or output…):
Intel NUC 8
After upgrading Rome my fstab cifs mount failed. After extensive digging with Grok I found the problem.
cifs now wants smbdirect that then wants infiniband.
Here’s Groks explanation
Good. That matches what the unknown-symbol errors were saying.
cifs on 7.2.6 pulls in smbdirect. smbdirect needs the RDMA stack (rdma_cm ib_core). On OpenMandriva those live in kernel-desktop-modules-infiniband, not in the main kernel-desktop package. Once that RPM was installed, the symbols resolved, the module loaded, and the fstab CIFS line could work again.
Keep two things in mind for the next kernel update:
- Extra module packages are per kernel version. After the next kernel-desktop bump, install the matching kernel-desktop-modules-infiniband for that same version (or include it in the same dnf distro-sync).
- You still have kernel-desktop-7.0.3-1 as a fallback. Leave it until you have rebooted cleanly on a newer kernel with CIFS working.
You do not need InfiniBand hardware for this. The package only supplies the modules smbdirect links against. A normal Ethernet NAS mount will keep using TCP.
Groks solution of installing the infiniband module solved the problem. Here’s the steps it provided.
Proper fix if you want a complete 7.2.6 module set
sudo dnf install kernel-desktop-modules-infiniband
That package must be 7.2.6-1, same NVR as kernel-desktop-7.2.6-1. Then:
sudo depmod -a
sudo modprobe ib_core
sudo modprobe rdma_cm
sudo modprobe cifs
I hope this helps someone else!
