Hello Everyone I have tried OpenMandriva and It was great experience i currently dual boot Windows and OpenMandriva in two separate Drives but i have a question Are you all Free software or Just don’t care about proprietry stuff
my wifi card works so I guess we don’t mind too much about proprietary blobs
Our CPUs would also have a hard time without some proprietary software code. There is just no getting around it. As long is the licenses are good, then we make do with working hardware.
The OMLx x86_64 and znver1 isos include only opensource software and they install a system with only opensource software.
There are some proprietary packages in non-free repos. Also in the Software Repository Selector aka om-repo-picker
we have for user choice to add repositories for some things like Brave and Google Chrome browsers and more.
What users do not want to do is mix repositories between branches or versions of OMLx. If you do you will get incompatible library packages and that can break things. For example if you use Rock use only rock repos. If you use ROME use only rolling repos.
Edit: Another example if user uses Rock user will not get more software available by enabling cooker or rolling repos. You will maybe get different versions of the same software and when you start mixing those that is where incompatible library packages can get installed. So don’t.
Whatever you do, ONLY use the the Software Repository Selector aka om-repo-picker
to set your repositories. NEVER EVER make the mistake of doing it in Plasma’s Discover or Gnome’s Software.
Also users can make package and feature requests (select New Issue). Whether something gets packaged depends partly on the license. And of course a developer or maintainer having time to do the project. We are a small all part-time, unpaid, volunteer group with all the benefits and limitations of that. Volunteers are welcome.
Hmmmmmm, probably a mix of both. I love the principle of Open Source software, but I do use my computer for work, and I’m not opposed to paying someone for their time to build something, so in that sense “pragmatic” I suppose?
I also came from Lunduke, welcome! You’re part of a big Lunduke community!
Most hardware support occurs in the form of kernel modules but not all. Some wifi cards need 3rd party software because of the license or other reasons. Also things like nVidia proprietary drivers would be in the non-free repo.
