How has OM been treating you?

Ta very muchly :+1:

OM took a little while to get used to

Re: Why is OpenMandrive rpm

Mandrake was originally a spin of RedHat (before RHEL was a thing)

Started out on Rock, moved to Rome after the 6.0 release. Running the beautiful KDE Plasma desktop. This OS has been incredibly stable, My one complaint is that the package selection is not as great as that of Debian. Hoping that will improve as time goes by.

For a fair comparison if we compare the numbers we must also compare those of the contributors, then make the math.
Imagine what OpenMandriva could do in perspective

I maintain some packages for Debian that are not present on OMLx. When I inquired about contributing some of these packages I met resistance followed by silence to my follow-up questions so I gave up. Because of these missing packages I keep using Debian at work for my workstation and CI containers.

OMLx won’t be on par with Debian any time soon, but if your use case aligns fairly will that that of the developers, it is a good experience.

What packages were those? I haven’t had any issue with that. I’ve had new packages I requested created, and I’ve also started creating/maintaining some packages myself.

Were the packages you wanted to contribute license-encumbered in some way?

OML has been treating me fine.
YouTube, OTOH, has been abusing me.
It started with the occasional captcha BS, a bit of of a PITA, but tolerable.
Then they escalated to ā€œPlease log in to prove you’re not a bot.ā€
I don’t have an account, and I don’t want one.
So now I’m migrating my ā€œsubscriptionsā€ from the ā€œPockettubeā€ Brave extension into Freetube.
Literally a case of ā€œThe harder they squeeze, the more that slips through their fingers.ā€
Before they did this, they could at least track a bit with cookies, collect some data, etc, but now they get FA, and all because they squeezed a bit too hard.

I have left YouTube; I can find more and more on Odysee.

Odysee, Rumble and so on have a long, long way to go to reach the depth and breadth of YouTube’s content.

True. But that is also why I watch videos on Odysee and Rumble.

YouTube merely stores videos until I can download them. Though I will occasionally use mpv directly

Freetube works for me.
No adds, no cookies, works through a proxy, and has sponsorblock built in.

i suppose it has been treating me well

i decided some months ago that i needed a breath of fresh air and decided to try openmandriva in its gnome spin, especially since openmandriva 6 finally boots on my computer (openmandriva 5 wasn’t booting after being installed)

main reasons why i decided to try it are that i wanted something a bit more european (no i don’t come from the lunduke video), and that i wanted something that is ready when it’s ready, and not when a fixed schedule says it, mostly due to me thinking that 6 months for developing a desktop environment are very few, and you only see few changes here and there

now after about 4 months with openmandriva gnome i can say that i am very satisfied with it

sure, i had some initial gripes with repos, and some gripes with the community, and i still have some unwanted quirks, but i came to the conclusion that openmandriva works very well and i have definitely settled here

it’s also very nice to have found an independent distribution in this ocean of derivates and clones…

For me, it is the best distro ever period.
