OpenMandriva Lx release 26.09 (ROME) Rolling for x86_64
Desktop environment (KDE, LXQT…):
KDE Plasma 6
Description of the issue (screenshots if relevant):
I get to the SDDM login screen. Unable to log into Plasma 6, both X11 and Wayland. I am able to log into the TDE Desktop, of all places. The Failsafe X terminal is working. As far as I can tell, there is no sound.
When I try to reinstall task-plasma6-minimal task-plasma6-x11 and task-plasma6-wayland, I am informed that krita-ai-diffusion, lib64avcodec, pipewire, task-plasma6-minimal, xdg-desktop-portal, and xdg-desktop-portal-kde, have broken dependencies. The package with conflicts is lib64jxl. Apparently without them, nothing works in Plasma6. This would explain the lack of sound and no Plasma desktop.
Relevant informations (hardware involved, software version, logs or output…):
ASUS X555UA laptop. Left on all night. Went to log in this morning and nothing.
I get the impression that the repositories are down or corrupted.
If that doesn’t work, do the following at your own risk as this will upgrade you to the latest version of Rome which has not been released yet (I am running it without any real issues).
sudo dnf clean all ; sudo dnf dsync --allowerasing 2>&1| tee dsync-log.txt
Thank you very much for the solution to the disappearing desktop headache. I never would have figured this out on my own.
This happened a few months ago the last time Rome was upgraded. That time there were still bits and pieces of Plasma5 that were not being replaced by Plasma6. That just adds to the confusion.
The really odd thing that I can’t understand is the TDE desktop stayed intact, despite a bunch of Trinity packages getting upgraded and downgraded. At the same time, I had LXQT installed as a “just in case desktop.” But it is completely gone missing. To me this makes no sense. I guess I will use TDE as the emergency desktop unless I find something else or am able to get LXQT working again.
However, there is still no sound from the speakers, with the speaker icon crossed out. “Connection to the Sound Service Lost” is what the dialog box informs. Clicking on retry solves nothing. Same message in System Settings – Sound. I tested it with several media players such as QMPlay2 which says it can’t open the audio stream. VLC does this:
Audio output failed:
The audio device “default” could not be used:
Connection refused.
While the video continues to play as if nothing is wrong.
Over in the browsers, no audio coming from any of them, Brave Origin, Vivaldi Stable, and Zen.
While testing, Haruna and MPV media players have no problem with audio.
Same results over on the TDE desktop.
Any ideas why sound would work for some and not others?
It was getting late last night and I didn’t think hard enough to do a screenshot. Therefore, I was not clear enough.
Over on the TDE desktop, I do have sound output settings, however, those settings have no effect on the results. No audio from VLC, QMPlay2, and the browsers while Haruna and MPV will output sound.
Y’all need to be talking to the TDE maintainer. That may mean talking to the upstream TDE project and working with them.
I think this was a zeroability project and he is gone. If that is correct then TDE needs a maintainer. That would mean someone steps up to do this. This is how a community distribution of LInux works.
I believe he was friends with the person that did this. More on this here.
I sincerely wish I had something more positive to report.
I am not too worried about TDE right now. TDE still works when the Plasma desktop falls apart after updating. Functioning when everything else falls apart is all it needs to do.
The lack of audio working is happening across the board, in both Plasma and TDE. This tells me the problem is not with TDE. If nobody is working on TDE, then that is not a problem right now.
Regardless, the audio should work for all apps, not just selective apps. Something is wrong with Pipewire or some other audio package. The point is sound is not working in both desktop environments.
Given the lack of reports about Plasma “falling apart” is it possible that mixing TDE and Plasma is causing that. Also the audio problem seems limited to this thread. I don’t claim to know the root problem.
My guess would be that mixing something unmaintained with something that is maintained can’t work unless you get it to a working state and never upgrade the system. Otherwise you will inevitably end up with library package conflicts. And library conflicts might be the problem here.
But I admit I am speculating, this is past my knowledge level.
Another guess would be to keep TDE and remove everything Plasma. You would probably need to downgrade some packages like pipewire and pulseaudio to what works with TDE.
Deleting Plasma and keeping TDE would solve nothing. There would still be no sound because it does not work in either desktop. I didn’t install TDE as my primary desktop. A few months ago it was released, so I installed it to see what it would do, and it worked. So I kept it along with the LXQT, which was supposed to be my primary backup desktop. But LXQT got wiped out with the latest update.
Plasma is the primary desktop. The lack of anyone else not saying anything doesn’t mean there is not a problem here. Apparently I have the right combination of hardware that causes a problem. Isn’t this what you were looking for when a few weeks ago you were looking for someone with old hardware? Which means that when this goes to Rock, eventually someone with old hardware like mine will encounter the same problem, give up, and walk away because odds are, that person was coming from another distro, not Windows.
I edited this post a couple of times. To many things going on at the same time and I am having difficulty keeping things straight.
Well, if I said anything offensive I did not mean to.
The title of this thread is confusing. To me it seems like the focus is on the first things mentioned.
So perhaps I should have gotten to the question of “what is the real problem here”? Is there a bug report for the current problem? I looked here and did not see a bug report for the sound problem.
Your last post reads like the main problem is sound, is this correct? To me it seems this thread starts with one problem and now we are discussing another problem, is that correct?
This started out with an upgrade to Rome running overnight when I should have cut the power before going to bed. I get up, no Plasma desktop, only TDE and the failsafe X terminal, along with no sound.
Before this, everything was working. I figured the sound problem happened with the Rome upgrade because that is when it quit working. My thinking is everything was related because the Plasma desktop and sound both quit at the same time.
@NLA gave me the answer to getting Plasma up and running again last night. But without any sound except in certain apps. This tells me there is still a bug floating around in the latest release of Rome. Right now the sound problem still remains.
Either @NLA forgot to include something with his solution to the Plasma desktop/sound problem, which I very highly doubt. Or the current Rome has trouble with an old ASUS laptop’s integrated audio.
Let’s take a look at what actually happened with the update. dnf history list --reverse to get a list of dnf transactions, and then post the output of dnf history info ### where ### is the actual ID number for the full update you did.
It is also possible this is hardware related or related to some module removed from the kernel. I don’t recall kernel modules being commonly associated with sound problems like they are with wifi.
Another thing to try that might apply to a hw problem is this from ROME Release Notes:
Default sound server switched to Pipewire
Pipewire has become our default sound server in the current system release together with WirePlumber, thus replacing PulseAudio.
However, PulseAudio is still in our repository and you can return to it at any time. To do that use this command string:
sudo dnf rm pipewire-pulse ; sudo dnf in pulseaudio-server
@NLA, thank you very much. That last one fixed everything once a reboot was performed. Here is the log. There were missing packages. I have no idea why.
Now everything is working again with Plasma X11. I still need to try Wayland. I am not too worried about TDE missing audio. It is there for emergency purposes as a backup desktop environment. At this point, TDE might be fixed, or not. I still need to go check.
Update:
Plasma Wayland is working. Better than X11 for some reason. Minimizing windows is not jerky, unlike in X11.
TDE is completely broken. Oh. Well. Probably time to remove it if nobody is maintaining it.
