Desktop does not load at boot, sometimes

Hello,

  • OpenMandriva Lx version: ROME 25.01

  • Desktop environment: KDE Plasma 6.2.5

  • Description of the issue (screenshots if relevant):

Sometimes, when I power on the computer the desktop doesn’t seem to load. This means there’s only a black background with none of my icons available. Right-click doesn’t bring up the context menu, either.

The panel loads normally and I can do everything I need to do without issue. The files themselves still exist and can be accessed with the file manager, but things like dragging files from/to the desktop won’t work.

For context, my laptop has a faulty screen and one of the first things that I do is disable the built-in monitor and rely solely on an external display. I can solve this problem by going into the settings to enable the builtin screen, and then just disable it again. So, easy enough, but it would be nice to not have to do this when this happens.

I should also mention that the built-in screen on the laptop stays on up until I login to my account. The background at that point still works fine and I see the wallpaper, it’s just right after I press enter to login that things seem to break.

  • Relevant informations (hardware involved, software version, logs or output…):

Maybe try to switch to tty, then use “xrandr --output” to switch the screen, then “startx”.
If ever you figure out geting into a X session create one automatic launch rule option for plasma.

Didn’t see where you said the internal screen was broken. You should be able to disable with either the /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d method of setting up a display config, or with xrandr as suggested.

There are several suggestions here, also. This is probably more what you are looking for:

Hi, thank you all for the replies!

Before I attempt to do anything strange with system files I want to clarify that I can still use everything normally. Like launching programs pinned to the taskbar, including the “start menu” that gives me access to all the settings and such. It’s not like I’m seeing a 70’s terminal.

I don’t want to disable the screen permanently. I still use it sometimes, it’s just that it flashes artifacts from time to time, which is annoying but very much usable (at least for now).

When I was using Linux Mint before I had the same setup and everything worked like I expected to. With OM Lx too, except that sometimes it doesn’t load the desktop icons, wallpaper, etc… I don’t think it’s an issue with my screen per se, I only mentioned it for context.

I would be happy with an easy way to “refresh” or “reload” the desktop, with a graphical tools if possible, if there is something like that. Going through the display settings doesn’t take too long… but is mildly annoying.

None that I’m aware of, I can’t exclude something may exist though.

rm -rf ~/.cache/plasma*
close console, open krunner (alt+space should work)
plasmashell --replace

Hi, thank you, I just turned on the computer and happened again:

These commands worked, and everything is fine again! It’s definitely easier than going through the settings, but of course I’ll have to remember it for next time… I’ll write it down somewhere.

Is there any way that I can troubleshoot this? Or provide some logs that can help the developers to fix it?

Cheers!

Hello everyone, sorry for bumping this one but this just happened again, except that this time the taskbar was also gone… interestingly enough, I could still switch between applications and press the Windows/Super key to open the start menu. It also happened after I resume the computer from sleep which is also new.

I’ve recorded a video but I couldn’t upload it here directly so I converted it into a GIF instead:
